Leveling up a character

I have recently received the game crafter expansion kit for hero quest. After much discussion in my playgroup we still have unanswered ?s . Any help would be appreciated.
There are higher lvl spells u can purchase from the mages guild . So as far as casting said higher lvl spells ... Would a lvl 6 spell require a lvl 6 wizard . Would it cost 6 mana to cast ? How would a wizard gain more mana . 1 mana a lvl ? There is an option also to "study the books " 25g is the cost . So maybe 4 studies gets a point .
Having a simple 2 or 3 point exp system per smaller creature kill would be ok but how to lvl up fairly to gain that lvl 6 spell . And if u give the wizard more mana u know the barbarian wants more health lol . Ty in advance
