**UPDATE**
This Quest Pack is now complete. Many thanks for the help and good suggestions from everyone that helped me finish this off. Playtesting still needs to be done for the 3rd & 4th Quest, but I don't think I will have the chance to do this any time soon.
Enjoy and please send me some feedback if you decide to play through it yourself or if you find any problems that need fixing.


Here is my first attempt at putting together a quest pack. The quests are an adaptation of 'the king under the forest' quest that appears in the book Dragon Warriors by Dave Morris. Most of the text has been copied from the original, so obviously I take no credit for the story. I have included an 'illumination rule' which has been a great addition when playtesting the quests.

I am undecided on what to do with 2 elements of the quests and would appreciate any suggestions.

  • The battle in the Warrior's Crypt in quest 3 - this is quest note B in the notes.
    I am looking for a way of drawing the Heroes into the center of the room, before putting the skeletons on the board. I haven't playtested this level yet but it still looks to me like the heroes can take 1 step inside the room, search for treasure, find the shield and then run. I want them to be trapped inside the room and have to hack their way out through the skeletons.
  • Vallandar's Sword - These will be the same as the Spirit Blade, not sure if I should let the Heroes take these swords with them when they finish the quest.

The pdf has now been updated to show changes to the maps and rules, thanks for the help Daedalus and Sjeng ;)

Still to do
  • Playtest the 3rd & 4th quests

Hopefully I will have this complete by the end of the December as I have an idea for a sequel project next year.

I see someone has been watching Clash of the Titans...polished shield and a fight with a gorgon...hehehe.

Of course you can, I would be honoured, but this quest pack is not quite finished yet.

Plenty of inspiration to be taken from Greek Mythology ;)
But on this occasion the Gorgon was part of the original 'Dragon Warriors RPG' quest I am adapting for Heroquest. The original text had the heroes finding a helmet with a mirrored visor, I think wearing the helmet reduced your vision, and I didn't wan't to translate these rules to Heroquest. So I replaced the helmet with a shield, as it is in Greek Mythology/Clash of the Titans. Just trying to keep it simple.

Just tell them that in order to search this room, all heroes need to be inside, then lock the doors magically.
And Vallandar's Sword could simply lose it's magic after it leaves the dungeon, and become a regular long/broadsword.

The way things are written, the Heroes would first trigger the placement of the Skeletons when they search for treasure or traps. That means the Skeletons must be defeated before any treasure may be gotten. You should add a note that the Shield is found afterwards, perhaps in the possession of one of the Skeletons.

This won't necessarily get the Heroes in the center of the room, however. You need some sort of bait, perhaps another door further in at the bottom right that leads to a room with the Shield (if you don't put it with a Skeleton). Place the Skeletons when this door is opened (an oath awakens them). A similar bait could be to have some sort of shrine in the crypt hall that attracts Bretwald, as done with the chapel at A. Once the lantern goes in there, the Heroes are pretty much obliged to follow. If they don't, have Bretwald's prayers awake the dead. Then they have to rescue him as you cut off his escape.

Because taking control of Bretwald is railroading the players, I'd place the door and hope that is enough to lure the Heroes in. If that fails, then have Bretwald enter and pray.

As for the swords, they could rapidly rust away or turn brittle when taken outside into the present world.

I like the idea of having one of the skeletons carry the shield. This would force the Heroes to defeat all the skeletons before finding the shield (providing they don't already have it from the Spiders Web). I might arm them all with shields and spears, + 1 defence and diagonal attack, or would that make this battle too difficult?

I am considering adding a second set of double doors into the crypt and setting both sets of doors to be permanently open . Then have the single door into the first room magically slam shut as Sjeng suggested. This could work out very bad for the Heroes if there is only one Hero + Bretwald inside the crypt!!

The Swords
I now want the Heroes to keep hold of these as I have an idea for a much larger follow up quest pack and they will be an important part of this.
