Denying treasure is nothing new to Hero Quest. The Heroes are played as porters in Quest 4 of the main system, Prince Magnus' Gold. They recover 750 gold coins, but they may only receive a 240 gold coin reward. Far worse, Quest 10, Castle of Mystery, "allows" any Hero to take 5000 gold coins with the penalty that they may not attack or defend--and it turns out to be fool's gold. But Quest 6, Halls of the Dead from Return of the Witchlord, definitely takes the cake: All gems and gold accumualated up to that point are lost, and adding insult to injury, there is no opportunity to spend them between the previous 5 Quests.

As for artifacts, the Bow of Vindication is taken away by Queen Terrellia in Quest 10 of the Elven Quest Pack. [edit]

This is actually a home-brew rule. There is nothing official stating that quests in KK or WL must be, or can be played in a series with no shopping between. It isn't logical, of course. As Heroes would never trek all the way back to a village for goods when they are in the middle of a dungeon. The American version however, encourages the purchase items between quests given the addition of the (over-priced) Alchemist's Shop.

Your right, of course, drathe. :cookie: Upon a thorough review of this subject in a Kellar's Keep thread I just replied to there, I found that the rules need another house rule to work if Armory and Alchemist's Shop visits are allowed. In short, the Heroes must not only locate the exit, but they must also go through it to successfully finish a Quest (thus allowing a visit to the Armory or Alchemist's Shop). It may seem obvious, but the house rule is necessary to avoid broken situations.

All other reasons for not allowing returns between Quests are merely thematically-based upon Parchment Text entries and the opening A Message from Mentor.

Honestly, unless some piece of equipment is lost somehow, it's very rare for any shopping to be done during any quest pack after the Game System. At least in my experiences. But I do enjoy your reply. Very well thought out. Take a read from the last paragraph of WL quest 5. ;)

in response to drathe's last comments - yet another reason for some sort of leveling system, or at least some sort
of restriction on things that can be bought until you reach a certain number of quests (I believe drathe came up with
that idea - restrict weapons until the heroes have completed 3 quests, 5 quests, 10 quests, etc.)

Sorry drathe - don't remember where that idea was exactly, so I can't point to it.
