Well, this is a bit weird to me... curious to know what religion is following your friend.
Anyway... Can't you consider that is not "MAGIC" but just special tricks, like modern illusionists do in TV show? His tricks deveice the monsters intelligence.
Did you also change the box subtitle? High Adventures in a World of Alchemy?

I'm not going to go into detail, but it's a personal thing for him, as opposed to some official doctrine.

You bet. Wrote it in Alchemical Marker. ;)

I too thought the reasoning was little strange, but I thought I'd ignore that as the ideas are good.

There is some reasoning here I think. According to occult tradition there is no such thing as good or evil magic. There is only magick, the use of which depends entirely on the user. It can be used for light or dark, depending on the intent, but at essence there is only one magical force.
So if someone is very opposed to the use of magic full stop, then quibbling over the good or bad kind is not going to convince them. The very act is seen as dangerous and corrupting. It’s not my view, but I can understand it.

A lot of main-stream religions have issues with magic. It just depends on how much
the individuals or families want to delve into that, how strongly they feel it is
bad or wrong. My dad didn't let us watch The Smurfs as kids, because of the magic
use in it. There are some who feel Dungeons and Dragons is horribly wrong. And
some did, and do, have issues with the Harry Potter series, because of the magic
involved.

I personally don't see a problem with accommodating someone's belief like this, as
long as it can be done well and still make things fun. Honestly, you could even take
out ALL magic, all undead, and just have the fighting characters, potions, and monsters,
and HQ could still be quite fun. It would just take a bit more work.

Yeah, others in the gaming group (and I myself) don't have a problem with it. I am by no means universalizing from one individual. I realize to some this may be like playing Mortal Kombat with only the friendships and babalities and rainbow colored blood (but that actually requires more skill to play that way). To me it's more like a total conversion (if anybody remembers the days of fan modding computer games... or more like a partial conversion).

More content, this time including some original additions (images are remixed/modified from those created by others, of course)...

"Lightning" is intended for the Mystic. Holy Water is for use by the Paladin (but he can give it to any other Hero to use)... I modified Holy Water so it does major damage to a "Chaos Creature" (Undead) OR restores a Mind Point to a good guy.
