For skeletons - imagine if there are individuals who know
a lot about tiny gears and construction of "robots". They could
be similar to a wind up toy, perhaps, and you would have tokens
to keep track of the number of turns they actually run before they
wind down.

Hmmm...have you ever seen the Disney cartoon Gummi Bears? They
actually have somethings that could give you ideas...old-school
gear and robotic type stuff from middle ages tech.

You can find a lot of them on youtube, I believe.

Ah, the clockwork knight..!* Reminds me of one of those stop motion kid's specials, in the same vein as Santa Claus and Rudolf. I do remember the Gummi Bears show, but it's been ages. Thanks for the tip! ;) All I remember was the Gummi berry juice that gave you super powers...

* Finally figured out which one it was... "Jack Frost" from 1979 (by Rankin Bass of course). I saw it once on tv as a kid, wow...

You could play space crusade. :-)

It will be interesting to see how this changes the game.

I really like your ideas here, I think they are very creative.
That said, I wouldn’t go to all that trouble just to accommodate someone else’s ideology. The entirety of Heroquest is a magical concept. It isn’t just the spells and artefacts, you’ll have to change the nature of Morcar and Mentor too, as well as the quests notes and intro text for pretty much every quest.

I would give them the option of playing as the Dwarf or the Barbarian. Say they are very distrustful of magic and won’t go near it (see if they would choose dying rather than accepting a healing spell from another Hero). If they still don’t want to play, then that’s fine. Plenty of other great games out there.

Originally we just took out the magical characters and powers, and just had a couple of extra classes of fighter. It was fun, but felt like a lot was missing.
So understand where you're coming from, but you would do it if was this person for you, since we pretty much discovered HQ together. 'nuff said. ;)

And a change to the divine or profane wouldn't work? I mean, that the "good" Magic used by the Heroes is actually divine in origin, whereas that used by the Chaos monsters is profane? That way, the player gets to battle the profane, which is something this person probably would want to do in reallife too, if he or she is so strict about it?
