GimmeYerGold's [revised] Custom Cards Preview: Encounters

Encounters! This is my last set to preview.

So, after attempting my own version of encounter cards, some of which generated new rooms, with traps and treasures, I found myself coming back to chaoticprime and Sjeng's Evil Wizard deck. My goal is "modularity" in these cards, and that set of cards has it! It is fun and flexible. You will find many of those original cards here, with altered images and some different wording. There are really only a few that are unique additions on my part.

Note:
1) Might change instances of "you" on these cards to "zargon," uuhhh just because i like changing things :ugeek:

Curious, with 24 cards has anyone using a deck similar to an Evil Wizard deck found that there was enough variety from quest to quest? I like the mechanic, and it seems to lend itself to refreshing encounters each game. So far, I think a deck like this is one of the strongest additions to a "vanilla" Heroquest that adds something new without over-complication. I want my other additions like the Settlement and Combat Skill deck to have that same feeling. Hopefully I can work that out before the final version of this run.

These card decks are new for me. I've downloaded Sjengs and Chaoticprimes, and now yours, but i am not sure when to draw a card. Each turn nothing else happens? And then you keep it on your hand until you want to use it?

If you're playing as the Evil Wizard and your turn begins with no monsters on the board, you may draw one card. Each card says when you are allowed to play it; you can play as many cards in a turn as you have available, as long as the conditions for using them are met.

^ Yep, I would go by the same rules too.

My only issues are some of the wording on the cards needs to be repaired.
Also, if the EWP is allowed to bank his cards I could see an easy party wipe with the use of a few of these cards in the right order. Maybe a limit on how many cards the EWP may bank before he must draw and discard one. If the EWP is holding a grip of cards when the heroes enter the room with the boss or the most monsters, defeating the challenge could easily become an impossibility.

That's a good point. It was considered in Sjeng's rules, the EWP cannot have more than 3 cards (or 4, I'd have to check), and must discard if another is drawn. I would follow those rules with these cards.

Did you have any examples on the wording that was broken?

I suggest putting a limit of "one per Hero character" on the Evil Wizard's hand size. Scaling is typically a good thing.

Yeah, 4 heroes vs 6 heroes can make a difference--that many more turns before Zarggy gets to go again :p

These are the rules that go with Sjeng's:

"RULES: Whenever the Evil Wizard Player gets his/her turn, but has no monsters on the board, he/she may
draw one card from the Evil Wizard Deck and choose to either play it or keep it for future use. Some cards
must be played immediately. The Evil Wizard Player may never have more than three cards in hand. If a
fourth card is drawn, one card must immediately be played or discarded."

It says
Use when you an enemy figurines movement reveals the contents of a room or corridor.


That doesn't work. I know what you are going for here but the wording is really bad.

As for a deadly scenario....
They open door and EWP throws down the cards :
Swarm of Bats
Undead Hero {save this sequence of cards for a room with a mummy}
Ambush
then at then end of your turn:
Creeping Shadows

I do love these! The idea of having Zargon more involved sounds great to me, and it will shake up quests that folks are already overly familiar with (Or have peaked at the quest book :) )

Only downside I can see is that it may already make quests like The Trial even more difficult for new players. Perhaps save them for the Rescue of Sir Ragnar?

Love that mimic. I think it's my favourite :D
