I think the solution would have been to fix your players not the rules.

What version do you play? I play the American version. I understand the monsters have more body points than in other versions, and I would think that the Wizard would be the player most affected by this variance.

Here's a version of the circlet with 5 slots, the four elemental spell stones and two stat raising gems that were adapted by sajungzak.
