Random encouter cards

Hi there,

I've not got anyone near to play Hero Quest with atm, so figured I'd get my hand in with some solo-play. Hmmm... lot's of room for misinterpretation there!!!

Anyway, above is my first resource to help me. I've got a set of 10 so far, all along the same lines.

What do you think?

neat idea - can we see the rest?

Do you have your own solo rules, or do you use those found on this site? I might be interested in
some different solo rules.

Are these cards something like event cards, that you draw each time you enter a room? If you use them as treasure cards, because I think the wondering monsters are enough in the treasure deck, I am sure your game will going to be very hard or no-one will search for treasures anymore.

With “D3 orcs” do you mean 3 six-sided dices?

The cards are nice but in my opinion it is better to make some monstrous tables, and roll polyhedral dices to check the results. Some nice tables could be very useful for quest creation and for stocking the dungeon. For example, an easy/normal/hard undead monster table, and an easy/normal/hard beast monster table with 10 encounters each could be more than enough.

A fast example:
Easy Beast Monster Table (1d20):
1: 1 Goblin
2: 2 Goblin
3: 3 Goblin
4-5: 1 Orc + 3 Goblin
6-7: 2 Orcs
8-9: 3 Orcs
10-13: 4 Orcs
14-16: 1 Fimir + 1 Orc
17-19: 2 Fimirs
20: 3 Fimirs

...And no need to make them very balanced. Sometimes is charming to play against unbalanced rules.

Actually, D3 usually means 1d3 - a three-sided die. WHICH...does not exist.
In most cases, you roll a six-sided die and divide by 2. Or you can simply say
1-2, 3-4, 5-6.

I bought a D3, while stricty it's a D6 it has two 1s two 2s and two 3s on the sides.

I like the event cards idea. It's like in Space Crusade some were good, some were bad- Weapons malfunction, out of ammo, gene stealer, psychic attack. Not sure what could be apply to heroquest but drawing 1 card per turn might add interest to the game.

As a further idea you could assign low and high difficulty to each card, so that different packs could be made for easy or hard quests.

I saw a very odd set of dice and one of them was a D3.
Here is a set of the dice I am talking about.

Pretty neat looking. I haven't held a set and rolled them but they look cool.

If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

They are 'encouter' cards.

My initial premis for solo play will be each time you entre a room or corridor, you draw a card.

I'm making cards that can represent each combination of creatures found in the basic questbook. That way, a bit of initial counting would tell me which cards I needed, including how many 'nonthing' cards I would need. That way, I would still encounter the monsters from the original map (perhaps a few more, or a few less with the D3 mechanic), but I'd never know which room would or wouldn't have them in. Even the 'boss' encoutner could be randomised.

And yes, D3 is just a normal 6 sided dice divided by two, rounding up. 1 or 2 = 1, 2 or 3 = 2, 5 or 6 = 3.

However, I could alternatively use a 'full deck'. So I could re-play 'The Maze' and encounter patrols of Fimir, Chaos Warriors or Zombie Hordes. This certainly could be achieved with tables. It would be less work. But also less Heroquest-ish. The game was about turing cards. I want to keep that.

I do have some home brew solo rules floating around my head, but this is my first step for them.

I'll add more as I can.

I made this one tonight, using the image tutorial from these forums!

Any good?

Edit: I just realised this was an older version of the card, with a mistake in the picture. Can you spot it?? :)
