European (UK/Australian) Chaos Spell cards

Postby Zenithfleet » Friday March 16th, 2012 7:36am

UPDATE #2 (14 July): Oops - forgot to mention that these cards are now also hosted on the Olde Inn courtesy of drathe, in easy-to-print PDF format. :D

UPDATE: Version 2 uploaded. Now with an alternative card back based on the Ogre Horde art. My inexpertise in Photoshop made this a bit of a chore (gah, those flames) but I reckon it looks OK. Not the best resolution but should look decent when printed at card size.

***Original Post***
Hi folks. I've finished my first little fan project--making European English versions of the North American Chaos Spells. Hopefully the way I'm uploading them (as an attachment plus a small preview image) is good and proper.

These didn't come in our edition of HeroQuest, so I've been eager to get onto this after I realised how easy it was. Give them to your Chaos Sorcerers and startle those Heroes!

I used Photoshop and drathe's wonderful EU Card Template, plus the art collections from the Olde Inn. I've also done a Chaos Spell card back, which was a bit trickier, but I'm reasonably happy with the result.

I've tried to word them as if they were official European releases, so they're considerably toned down in their power level from the NA spells. I changed one or two names to distinguish them from spells in Wizards of Morcar. I also didn't include an Escape spell, as there's one in Wizards of Morcar that's perfect already.

Please see the readme file for slightly obsessive details on how I adapted the cards.

EU players, please let me know what you think! If you find any errors or dubious rules, let me know.

If feedback is good, I'll ask drathe if he wouldn't mind making them downloadable on the homepage. (I'd rather not host them elsewhere for now, as HQ is after all somebody else's copyright and I'd prefer to make these available only where Milton Bradley has already granted permission for such materials.) (EDIT: Apparently they haven't. Whoops. Never mind.)

Of course, if someone's already made their own versions, please point me in their general direction so I can have a look!

There are also chaos spells for the Barbarian and Elf QP's, nice work so far.

Summon green skins; nice idea instead of just orcs. I'm going to make a 'summon goblins card' to go with my 'summon orcs card'. It'll make more sense when I use a my goblin shaman

Argh, don't give me ideas! I'd want to convert the entire Quest Pack over to EU format if I started on those...

As for 'Summon Greenskins', well, the NA spell brings both Orcs and Goblins, but I couldn't fit 'Summon Orcs & Goblins' into the card title :?

perhaps a project for the future?
My kit is a mash of original cards, home made, NA, EU styles cards etc. Would be nice to have a complete EU style card set.

I prefer the NA rules generally but prefer the EU styling on the cards

You've achieved a very high standard indeed. It's a shame the image they use for the back of chaos spells is totally plop.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Glad you were able to make use of the Photoshop templates and images.

That actually wouldn't be us. We don't have any official permission. But we do acknowledge that Hasbro owns the rights to HeroQuest and do not challenge that fact. Should they ever contact us and request any official material be taken down, we will comply.

Haha, it is a bit... meh, isn't it. Reminds me of that weird world inside the shadows from the 90s Skeleton Warriors cartoon. I'm not entirely happy with how the card back came out anyhow--I accidentally lost the PSD file for it so couldn't easily correct mistakes like I did for the others.

I might try again using one of the Chaos Sorcerer images on the tokens from the Ogre Horde expansion.

UPDATE: Hmm, the CS Ogre Horde image I found (in a PDF on this site) is too low resolution. Any ideas for other art I could use for EU Chaos Spells? I'd prefer to use only actual HeroQuest art if possible.

Oh. Really? I was sure I read somewhere that you and a couple of other fansites had asked Hasbro and received a letter saying 'yeah, we don't mind for now, since it's discontinued'. Maybe I'm just bonkers... I never took that to mean you had permanent permission of any sort, though.

We have tried contacting Hasbro (US) a couple times, but never received a response. There was a Website formerly called HeroQuest-Official.com that supposedly received a letter stating they could have a HeroQuest Website. It is my understanding they received their okay based on a Website prior to having download-able material. A few years ago they lost the domain name. Not sure exactly why, but the site still exists under their original redirect.

Hmm, I see. (I do recall reading a few threads about that particular site while I was lurking... say no more!) Considering how long Ye Olde Inn and Agin's Inn have been around, I guess they're just not interested.

Anyway, I've risen to Ethica's challenge and updated the Chaos Spells with an alternative card back. Version 2 ready for download above!

drathe, would you be interested in hosting these on the Olde Inn?

That new back is 100 times better than the old one.
