Completely thrown by HeroQuest!

Postby Perchpole » Tuesday May 10th, 2022 6:54am

Hello, All

As an old D&D gamer in the 80s I’d always dismissed HQ as a bit “light”. Even so, that didn’t stop me buying Warhammer Quest in 1995. It was a great product and one which gave me a lot of pleasure. When rumours began to circulate about a new Hasbro version of HQ, I again dismissed it as a kid’s game - albeit one that had a certain nostalgic value for many adults!

So imagine my surprise when I actually bought a copy (finally). I’d always thought its simplicity would be its weakness. In fact it’s the game’s strength. I absolutely love it and I can fully understand why sites such as this one are still standing decades later!

More please!

Welcome to the forums and thanks for sharing your thoughts. Even setting aside the nostalgia, you're quite right about this being a very appealing part of HQ even for older jaded RPG fans used to more "complexity" in their tabletop fantasy gaming who might otherwise snub this great game!

HeroQuest isn't just an introduction to that type of gaming, I think it can stand on its own as this community's longevity and the success of the remake thus far has proven.

To me another great strength is that it's self contained. You don't really have to buy anything more than the base set, and the rest is your imagination creating new stuff, even if people do love their expansions (mostly just to have more different looking miniatures on the board at once!).

I always liked the fact that you didn't need a thick book of rules to be able to play, yet you can add the complexity that you want.

Glad to have you as a new convert, Perchpole! I was that same D&D/AD&D gamer back in '90, but fortunately one of our group bought it as a X-mas gift for his brother and we gave it a go. HQ turned out to not only fill in as a great beer and pretzels game for shorter nights, but also was a game we could share socially with a wider group of our friends. It even worked as a gateway to AD&D for a couple of them. No other game was so fun to share . . . good times.

It is light—that's not a bad thing! You very well could use the rules from a game like Wrath of Ashardalon or similar with the HQ assets to play something more D&D-like if you want to. Or you could adapt HQ's rules to suit other adventures. I've been kind of noodling what happens when you take HQ rules and start thinking about Knave's classlessness. I'm far from "done" with that, though.
