When Heroquest was published in Germany, I was 20 and I and my friends had been heavily active in P&P roleplaying games already for five years (which is a rather long time for a teenager). The Dark Eye, Midgard, Call of Cthulu, Dungeons & Dragons, plus some of the more obscure games that spread lilke wildfire those years.
We could not really take the gaming principle of Heroquest serious back then, but were flattened by the game material. So I and a friend throuw our money together and bought a single copy for both of us to use, but with the intention to just use the material to enhance our roleplaying experience.
Of course, I read the rules and gave it a try, out of couriosity, but it was not until much later, that I really got the knack of it.
When I was a senior student, writing my doctor's theme, living in another city with mostly other friends, we didn't have the time to do much P&P, so I learnt to apreciate the genius behind the simplicity of Heroquest.
