We saddled up the horses and hogs and set out. Our pace is not quick, as many of the army is on foot. It took the better part of a week to get around the base of the peak. We could see the large plumes of smoke. Between the smoke clouds, I could pick out silhouettes of large statues. These statues were atleast one hundred feet tall. As we rode closer, I could see something there. It was a figure standing there.

"You are late! The enemy has a head start!" yelled out Querdo.

I answered back, "We were waiting for you at Luvremburg."

"You fool! I was here! I thought you were in charge?" he snarled back.

"The dwarves are stubborn and waited for you. I took out staffs and now we are here," I defensively answered.

"Good. Welcome to the kingdom of Yerber. The king is eager to meet you. The orcs are ravishing his farms," Querdo calmly replied.

We rode past remnants of castles. We passed by many straw villages. Went around a bend in a river, and then a huge castle stood before us. The castle was green like emeralds and was surrounded by a deep moat. Ivy climbed the towers with bright blooms of white. The drawbridge was down but the thirty foot tall gate was shut. Querdo gave a shout and the gate began to rise.

Inside the castle was more exquisite then the outside. Large, carved statues stood everywhere. Gold and silver adorned just about everything. Then a tall man approached us. He was surrounded by spearmen. This is obviously the king approaching. He wore a gold crown encrusted with emeralds. A robe that matched the castle walls hung over a suit of gold. He carried a sword and shield. His shield was silver with a dragon on it. In the dragon's mouth was a white flower like the ivy.

"Welcome to Yerber, master Jathan. We are in need of your aid. I am King Merkel. We have eight hundred calvary ready to join you. Get a good nights rest to get fresh. Our pantries are open and servants ready to serve you," the man said.

"Thank you, King Merkel. I hope we can help rid these orc filth," I replied.

"I see your father in you, and hear you are growing ever stronger. It is good to have your aid," King Merkel said.

We filled our bellies, then found nice beds. Ta stayed in the same room as me. He was worried about trouble. We dozed off for a few, good hours. Then, suddenly, loud drums were heard outside. Whistling and crashing sounds all around.

"Grab your weapons! Time to fight!" I yelled.

War was upon us! We had no need to seek it out. Scores and scores of monsters were outside the castle walls. Catapults were smashing the towers. Goblins climbing the walls. Arrows raining down upon them. I had my longbow ready. I was launching arrow after arrow. Every shot hit it's mark. I killed thirty orcs, a troll, and twenty-three goblins with my bow. Then the ogres busted through the gate. A flood of orcs and goblins streamed in. I was swinging my blade left and right. My friends fighting beside me.

Suddenly Bo stood before me. He held a giant wooden club. He swung at me. I blocked the blow with my father's sword. He hit me with his free fist and I crashed to the floor. Bo, then, stood with one foot on my chest. He raised the club in the air and I could not move. I squirmed and yelled, but he was too heavy. Suddenly, Ta charged his cousin. He was swinging a large blade. It seemed to move almost franticly. Bo gave out a roar as the two locked into battle. Blow after blow, the cousins fought viciously. I could hardly tell who had the upper hand. A giant swing, from over Ta's head, crashed into Bo's neck. He screamed in agony and fell to the floor. His giant leg fell upon me. I was pinned in place.

The dwarves and elves were driving the orcs back. The armed men were driving the goblins back. It seemed the battle was on our side. Then, I could see Querdo battling something. It knew magic just as him. Balls of flame and bolts of lightning could be seen back and forth. It was a dark creature. Ears pointed like an elf. A crooked nose. Eyes of fire. It wore black chainmail and carried a staff. The staff looked charred by fire and was topped with a silver orb.

Ta pulled me free. I thanked him for saving my life. I quickly ran to Querdo's aid. As I got closer, my father's sword began to quiver. I yelled out something, but do not know what I said. A flash of blue light came from the sword's tip. The creature screamed in horror. It fled as fast as it could. A small, red dragon quickly flew down and scooped up the creature. It climbed on the dragon's back and flew off into the distance. A loud horn sounded and the army started to retreat. I chased down as many monsters as I could. I lost count of how many I disposed of.

As the creatures went away, I began to look around at the carnage. The beautiful castle was still standing. Although, it needed many a repair. We lost almost half our troops, but the enemy lost much greater numbers. A solemn victory. There was no feast that evening. Most of us could barely rest, even with the exhaustion overtaking us. Time to regroup and come up with a plan.

Re: Travels of Sir Jathan

Postby j_dean80 » April 25th, 2017, 11:48 pm

At some point, during the night, I fell asleep. When I awoke, it was already midday. Repairs were being made. Weapons were being reforged. Horses were being trained. Seemed all were preparing for war but me. I was still lost. I am supposed to lead, but I do not know where the monsters are coming from or why. I do not know what fought against Querdo. I especially do not know how my father's sword seemed to spark and why that creature ran from it in a panic. Time to find some answers.

I searched the castle for Querdo. I had a lot of questions for him. Deep in the cellars, I finally found him. He was rummaging through books and scrolls. I spoke first, "Querdo, I have questions that need answered."

Querdo handed me a stack of books and a few loose scrolls. He said, "Read these." Then, he just walked away.

I guess I have some work to do. My father taught me to read. I was never very good at it. A simple book took me three times longer than other people. I sat myself at a large table with plenty of candles. Then, I started with the scrolls, since they were shorter. One was a map. I could not read the names. They were in some strange language. I recognized some of the landmarks, anyhow. Another scroll was filled with single words and short phrases. It appeared to be written in Elvish. The third scroll was a family history record. None of the names were familiar to me. Why did Querdo want me to read these things?

I opened the first book. It was a history of the First Great War. It spoke of a demon spectre who gathered a huge army to blot out the kingdom of Yerber. A rugged warrior, from Luvremberg, rose through the ranks with his skill. He came from a povered family. His name was Buvell. Buvell gathered up the remnants of the army and marched directly into the demon spectre's fortress. He defeated his enemy with a blow from his sword. His sword gave off a blue spark, just as mine did.

I remember that name from somewhere. I scrounged through the texts. Aha! Buvell was the top name on the family history scroll. Just below him was his son Treb.

I opened another book and began to read. I dozed off and on. Kept finding my face literally buried in the book. My drool was running the ink. So, I decided to lay back in the chair for a nap.

Re: Travels of Sir Jathan

Postby j_dean80 » April 30th, 2017, 10:53 pm

I woke when I fell off the chair. It was pitch black in the room. The candles burned out while I was asleep. I stumbled around, knocking something over. Tripped over a stair. Aha, found the way out. I began to climb the stairs until I could see light. Of all people, I ran into Etrine. Oh, was he ever eager to talk.

Etrine chirped up, "Jathan! My dear friend! Where you been hiding? What is the plan? Why aren't you talking? I seem to be the only one speaking."

I slowly answered, "I was reading. Was looking for a light." I grabbed the torch from his hand. "Thanks for the light."

I proceeded back down the stairs to the study. Started to pick up the mess I had made. Then, I caught a glimpse of a page in another book. It was another that Querdo handed me. It was a story about the Second Great War. Treb was leading a makeshift army, much like his father. He crossed the Scarred Desert to reach the evil kingdom of Bartul-dol. The kingdom lay in the Twisted Mountains. They were so-named for the snake-like shape they assumed. They wound about the Silt River. The kingdom was ruled by the Fire Elves. These were no ordinary elves. These were wicked. They rode dragons and used fire magic. Legend says, they dabbled in chaos magic until it consumed them.

I began talking aloud, "Querdo must have been fighting a Fire Elf!"

I continued reading. Treb led his army to their demise. He did, however, strike down their king with his sword. His sword gave off the same blue spark as when his father wielded it. He managed to escape upon a dragon. I scrambled for the family history scroll. The last recorded descendent is named Phinehas. I know now what I must do. I need to find this Phinehas.

I quickly gathered the scrolls and ran up the stairs. Went to my chamber to gather my things. Ta was sitting there, eating something.

He spoke up, "Been couple days. Thought you was lost. Wherever you are headed, in such a hurry, I am going with."

The two of us set out the castle gate. Sellert, Elther, and Etrine quickly caught up. No words were spoken, but I was glad to have the company. They understood too. Not sure where to find this Phinehas, but for now, we rode north.

Re: Travels of Sir Jathan

Postby j_dean80 » May 8th, 2017, 10:51 pm

It took weeks to get across the Desert Plains. They are not desert at the least. They are named more for their location near the Scarred Desert then anything. Very fertile lands with lots of farms. There is very little natural vegetation, though. That is made due to the extreme winds and constant flash flooding. The local farmers have adapted by building large stone walls to block the wind and water. When we approached one of these farms for food or supplies, Ta would always hide. Not likely the people will help an ogre.

I could see the peak near Luvremberg. Every day I stared at it. When we started out, it was more to our north. As we continued, it was to our east. Now we have reached the edge of the Plains, and it is more to our south. It was, in a way, my guiding star.

We arrived at the shore of a rapid river. There was no crossing within sight. I started asking around, "Where do you think we will find a crossing? Follow the river west or north?"

No answers were given. Not even Etrine chirped in. Guess it is up to me.

"Lets head west. It looks flatter. Maybe find a shallow crossing," I said confidently.

We found ourselves, soon, wading through swamp. Lot of noises come from the water. Who knows what evil lay in there?

I called out, "Over there! There seems to be some sort of path."

We waded through deep water to reach the path. It was high and dry. Paved with white stones.

Elther spoke, "This path is elf made. Well maintained too. We must be near the kingdom of the Ranger Elves. They keep solitary in their forest. Very good archers. We may not be welcome here. Let us cross the river, and then, get off the path."

We continued down the path. We were greeted by exquisite stone statues of elf warriors. Hundreds of them lined the path. Very eery feeling. Finally, we came upon a stone bridge. A watch post was on the far side. None of us could pick out anyone there, so we decided to cross. We made it across, and still no signs of anyone.

"Jump off the path and wade across the swamp," I ordered.

We all did just that. Then, the water started to churn. Not a little, but a lot. The whole of the water was moving. I could see many sets of eyes, just below the surface. Large jaws with sharp teeth coming at us. The others started to panic. I tried to keep calm. I took out my sword, raised it high in the air. I said something that I do not understand. Then, I hit the water with the sword. Blue sparks shot out in all directions.

Everything went dark...

Re: Travels of Sir Jathan

Postby j_dean80 » May 10th, 2017, 9:00 pm

I woke, very dazed. The room was spinning. Room?

"Wait! Where am I?" I called out.

I was lying on a hard bench. My eyes were beginning to come back. I could see a barred door. I must be in a prison cell. Panic came over me. Where are the others? Are they alright?

I started yelling out the door, "Sellert!? Ta!? Elther!? Etrine!? Anyone here?"

I heard no answer. Just a loud bang on the door. Who was it? I yelled out again. This time, an even louder bang answered. So, I layed back down. I just stared at the wall. Much time slowly passed. Finally, I heard a voice.

"Dinner! Eat up or starve. I don't really care," called out the voice through the hall.

A plate was slid under the door. A fish head, some moldy cheese, and a biscuit missing a bite. The biscuit was hard as a stone. I ate what I could hold down. I kept the biscuit and slid the plate back out. This may make for a good weapon. I have no idea where I am or why I am here. Isn't someone going to question me?

Days passed into weeks. Same meal twice a day. At this point, I have a pile of stone biscuits. Just waiting for a target to throw them at. The only voice I ever heard was the meal person. I tried to question him a couple of times. Each time, he would skip my meal.

One day I decided to keep my plate. That should force someone to come in after it. Right? On the contrary. I just got skipped my meals until I returned the plate. Once I returned my plate, my meals began again. I am running out of ideas. I layed on the bench most of my days. A sight of a scroll kept popping into my mind. The thought returned again and again. Each time, the sight became clearer than the last. I could now pick out a letter or two. Then whole words. Then phrases. I could not understand it. It was in elvish. I recognized it as the scroll Querdo gave to me to read.

I tried to read a phrase aloud. Sounded like gibberish. I tried another. Same result. What am I to do with this information? I don't even know what it means.

Early one morning, before the first meal, there came a loud explosion! It woke me in a stupor. I fell to the floor. Now what is happening?

Re: Travels of Sir Jathan

Postby j_dean80 » May 12th, 2017, 11:10 pm

I finally heard voices. People running and yelling.

"Grab your weapons! They are on our doorstep!" echoed through the halls.

I could hear fighting taking place. Then, another loud explosion. I need to get out of here. Wherever here is.

I attempted to say the elvish phrase again, "Eusney ter pal dreft!" This time the words flowed out of my mouth. It was as if they were waiting to be released.

Click. Click. Pop. The door swung open. No one was outside. I began to wander down the corridor. I went the opposite direction of the fighting. Checked room after room. A door was calling to me. Was as if it had a soul. "It's locked. I must find a way in," I said aloud.

"Not without my approval," a voice interrupted.

"Who said that?" I asked.

"I did, of course," the voice answered.

"I can see no one! Where are you?" I spoke frustratingly.

"You are standing in front of me, staring straight at me," it replied.

"The door? You can talk? I figured you out, now let me in!" I demanded.

"Very well. Only because I know the sword is yours. Fetch it and touch nothing else," the door said.

"My bow and quiver too?" I pleaded.

"Yes! Yes! Just hurry! They need your help," spoke the door.

The door opened and I rushed in. My weapons were lying on a bench. I quickly grabbed them and bolted out. Now, I ran towards the sounds of fighting. What I found were gray haired elves fighting against overly stocky dwarves. Not fat, but muscle. In the corner I saw a tall robed figure. He was shaking his head in his hands. I need to talk to him. That is where I headed.

"You look like a mage, with your staff and all. What is going on here?" I prodded him.

"I am indeed a mage! I am the Earth Mage! My power comes from the gems pulled from the dirt and rock! What is going on here? It appears to be a battle! You don't know a battle when you see one? My name is Yarz! I am the youngest of the mages! I know who you are! You are Jathan! Querdo told me you may be near! I would indeed say near! You are in front of my nose! Oh and my nose sure can smell you! Come to my tower and wash up! You certainly need it!" he said in a frenzy. One word followed the next without a breath.

I interrupted him, "Whoa! Slow down! I know it is a battle, but why? Do you know where my friends are?" Do you know why I was locked up?"

Yarz rapidly responded, "The Ranger Elves found you unconscious! They thought you to be a spy! They are fighting over territory! The dwarves are mining under the elves land and the elves claim the gems are theirs! They have been on and off at war for three months! Three whole months! No one will listen to me! Perhaps you can change their mind?!"

I interrupted him again, "Where are my friends?"

"Probably asleep! Lazy bunch they are! Won't help me with simple tasks!" he spout on.

"Where?!!!" I shouted.

"Wow! Temper on you! At my tower! I already told you to go there! You don't listen well! Lets get moving! No time to waste!" Yarz went on.

We set out through the Gray Forest, home of the Ranger Elves. Days and days of hiking. Nothing but trees and the occasional animal scurrying along. One thing the hiking succeeded at...making Yarz stop talking. We finally arrived at the edge of the trees. In front of us was the Gray Marsh. Yarz knew a path. It led us right through without getting our feet wet. This was the controversial area the dwarves were mining under. In the far distance I could see razor sharp peaks. High as I ever seen.

"What mountains are those?" I asked Yarz. I was afraid of the consequence of breaking this glorious silence.

"The Splinter Mountains! That is where the dwarves live! They have tunnels for miles! Their Great City of Erendum is rumored to be rich upon rich! Up ahead, you see it? My beautiful tower! Home alas!" Yarz spoke quickly.

Beautiful tower? It was tall and black as night. Looked highly like Querdo's, but much, much less up kept. Not as ornate as Querdo's either.

Re: Travels of Sir Jathan

Yarz flung the doors open violently. "I'm home, ya lazies! Where you at?! I found something of interest to you!" Yarz shouted out.

Sellert came around first. "Master Jathan! So glad to see you!" he yelled, as he ran towards me.

The others heard and quickly came. We sat for a good, long meal. Something I had been longing for. We exchanged stories from the past few weeks. When I hit the water with the sword, everyone blacked out. I woke in the elf dungeon. Everyone else woke in Yarz's tower. Yarz had to fill in some blanks. He found a dwarf, 2 elves, and an ogre lying under a tree in the swamp. He had heard from Querdo about our trek, so knew who they had to be. He gathered some horses to take them to his tower on carts. There they rested until they each came to. They helped him with chores and repairs. Which, according to Yarz, they were lazy. I must have been knocked a distance in another direction, then was found by the elves.

"Time to go! We must hurry! Come on! Lets go!" Yarz touted on and on. He sprung out of the tower like a rabbit. Kept talking and talking as he went.

"We better hurry to keep up. He won't slow down for us," I said.

We quickly headed out after Yarz. He was moving fast. We followed him south. Not sure where to. We gained closer to the massive Splinter Mountains. I'm starting to realize where he is leading us.

"Kep nar Erendum deke lop! Kep nar Erendum deke lop!" I could hear Yarz repeating, over again, the whole journey.

Sellert understood every word. Yarz was chanting in dwarvish, though, a slightly different dialect.

"He is chanting that Erendum will accept us in," Sellert told us. "I heard tales of this place since I was a child. It is like a dream to be here."

We approached an enormous set of doors. Carved with giant dwarves standing on each side. One was holding a giant hammer, the other a giant battle axe. The doors were atleast one hundred foot tall. The doors led directly into the side of the mountain.

"Lets hope they do not kill us!" Yarz shouted as he headed closer to the door. He went alone.

He gave three loud knocks on the door. A small window opened and I could see him talking. After some time, the window slammed shut. We had nothing to do but stand and wait.

After a good, long wait, one door began to swing open. An overly tall, muscular dwarf walked out. He was fully armed in bronze plate mail and helmet. He carried a bronze shield and a large hammer. The shield was engraved with a horned beast.

"This is a strange company. I am Mawr. What business do you have in Erendum?" the dwarf spoke.

"I am Yarz! You know me! I demand to see the king!" Yarz madly answered.

"He is not here. Come back later." Mawr retorted.

"Nonsense! Let us in!" Yarz shouted, as he was pushing through the doorway.

We followed Yarz through huge corridors. He went quick as ever, seemingly knowing the right way. Over bridges with huge drops. Through massive sets of doors. Through mazes of statues. Down a wooden elevator. We, eventually, came to a massive chamber. Seated upon a giant bronze throne, was the king. The throne gleamed with gems, as did the king's ornate crown. He stood up quickly, almost jumping from his seat. Grabbed his sword, and pointed it at us.

"How dare you enter my chamber as if you own it! Why shouldn't I slay you all here and now?!" the king roared.

The guards surrounded us with spears pointed. Everyone thought we were done for. That's when my deep down traits started to come forth. By that, I mean the leadership qualities inherited from my father.

I stood forward. A spear poking me in the chest. "I am Jathan, son of Ilthan. I demand an audience with you," I confidently spoke aloud.
