Chaos Warrior conversion 2 axes

Postby billdask » Wednesday June 5th, 2013 6:09am

Recently I've got a spare Chaos Warrior from an ebay auction and I thought it would be a good mini for experimenting with instant mold and green stuff.
I haven't used green stuff before; I had only used it to cast small parts with instant mold.
Anyway, my plan was to fit an axe on to his left hand, but the hand position wasn't convenient for such a conversion. So I just had to cut it and replace it with a new one.
First step was to recast the original axe, so I used instant mold and resin to reproduce the axe. I cut the middle part of the axe and replaced it with a plastic sprue.
Now, the hard part was to recreate a left hand similar to the right hand. Therefore, I got some green stuff and after an hour of trial and error I managed to sculpture a decent hand. :D :D :D :D

And here is the result!! :chaoswarrior:

Very nice. Conversions like that are not that hard to do once you figure out the right tactic.

My advice, to help you along, is to always use a razor saw to cut parts off. They make a clean cut, that does not crush material like cutters do.

Use a pin vice to hand-drill a circuit between the foreign object and the graft. Use bendable wire with shape retention to connect them. Superglue is fine to connect the ends, just so long as you go easy with it.

When you use a pin vice to make a hole, such as when pinning two-halve of a weapon through a hand, first use a blade to cut an 'X' across the location you want the pin to go. You will not have a problem planting the bit straight.

You did well to use green stuff. When you just want fill a gap, rub excessive amounts into the crease, and then slobber over the tip of a cheap paint brush. Use the brush to work the green stuff in, and to push away the excess.

I did something similar here.

Really nice!
I'm very interested in resin casting. I'd love to be able to make duplicates of whatever I want.

Buy his replicas. They are identical to the originals. He's likely to have some Advanced Heroquest stuff soon, too.

To be honest, I don't like the originals (I'm only talking about the BQ and EQ packs).
I have much more beautiful replacements for all of them (well, except for the Yetis) and I'm not that much of a completist to own those minis I just don't like.

Those I have. Two sets of heroes, 4 sets of Skaven and Henchmen. In Europe, there are so many of those we don't know what to do with them...

Thanks I'll keep your advices in mind for my next conversion. I should have used a wire, that would have made the procedure a lot easier.
Interesting conversion on the Dwarf. He looks so relaxed but ready for action lol.

For small non complicated 3D pieces such as bases, weapons, heads etc, then instant mold is perfect cause is reusable. You can search for it on ebay as OYUMARU, which is a lot cheaper than "instant mold".

I agree only for the Yeti, cause it's more like a teddy bear rather than a decent monster. But all the rest minis are fantastic.

I traded him stuff from the Advanced Heroquest Paintset, too. I just found some more goblin archers I am going to mail. I would for someone to hook him up with some 3rd Edition Talisman figs, now.

Oh man, I'm still looking for those original HQ-like goblin archers xD
I should browse eBay more often. Keep me informed if there's ever another Goblin archers sale for a good price ;)
