What's your avatar?

Postby Sjeng » Sunday November 4th, 2012 4:50am

I've been seeing a lot of cool avatars on this forum, some are easily identified as HeroQuest or related images, or painted miniatures, but not all of 'em are.

So I'd like you all to post here and explain what your avatar is exactly, and why you chose it :)

Mine is a screenshot of "Mad King Thorn" from the CORPG GuildWars, an NPC that comes around once a year during halloween, and tells bad jokes that literally slay the audience, and makes you play "Mad King Says", a deranged game where you have to use emotes (or not) to get trick or treat baggies, or DIE when failing. It's my favourite NPC in GuildWars, even in GW2 he made a major appearance last week.

I'm knightkrawler on 3 different forums.
The name is a play on Marvel's Nightcrawler who I adore as a comic book character.
I chose that particular spelling because it indirectly references HeroQuest and Fantasy and dungeoncrawling and because I like the letter 'k'.

I change my avatars now and then and usually they are pictures of the comic book hero.
But when I wanted to find a new one I hadn't used I didn't. The useful ones were all bigger than 100x100 pixels.

So, I went for the original meaning of the word nightcrawler: they are earthworms, so, there's my currennt avatar.

Why don't you resize your nightcrawler pictures yourself? Just use photoshop or something similar, and resize then, then save for web.

I made some for ya ;)

Mine is the first animated GIF I've ever made in Photoshop. (yes, it's animated... wait for it... then wait again...) Modelled after the eye in a painting a friend made, based on my character drathe used in Phantasy Star Online.

I never did edit the avatar on this forum. On another, I had chosen a picture of Linus holding his blanket
(from the Peanuts cartoons). I have loved the peanuts for a LONG time, and have a whole mess of their
stuff - movies, ceramic figures, stuff snoopy dolls, etc.

My name, however...torilen...that is actually the very first fantasy character name I created way back when,
when I first started my hobby of fantasy world design. That must've been...sheesh...20 years ago or so, I guess.
Torilen Rhegaln...he was the tutor for a princess for a number of years, and then they become engaged, and her
father dies. The governors' council wants to rebel and pull away from the crown, and torilen has to go hunt down
an evil wizard who is looking for a powerful book of spells, while the princess deals with the revolution.

Re: What's your avatar?

Postby Big Bene » Monday November 5th, 2012 10:03am

Well, once upon a time I started to make a Questbook, essentially an expanded/advanced version of Return of the Witchking. I designed a cover for it, based on the original Witch king cover - I took the figure of our great arch enemy himself and photoshopped it a bit. Isn't it strange how Photoshop has become a verb? Of course I didn't use Adobe Photoshop but Micrografx' Picture Publisher, which has almost the same functionality but is infinitely cheaper and more user-friendly. I changed the king's postion from sitting to standing and put him into a large, gloomy vault (don't remember the source of the latter).
When looking for an avatar, I just cut the head from this cover illustration. drathe's blinking eye avatar got the better of me, and I felt compelled to do something like this. So I added a little animation.

As for my user name, Big Bene, it's obvousely a pun on my real name Benedikt and Big Ben. I used it as a charakter name in video games since around 1985.

Edit:
I don't know why, but drathe's name at the end of the first paragraph keeps showing up lowercase, altough I write i uppercase in the edit panel...
Have a look ;)

I've had the username 'spiky' ever since joining some Bloodbowl forums in 2003.

A couple of years ago I saw the hedgehog on some Childrens clothing in a Supermarket.

A quick pic with my camera phone, and I've used it ever since...

This would indicate that you have the forum censors turned on in your User Control Panel (they are on by default). There is censor to replace my name in all lowercase because I don't capitalise it. :)
