This was a lot harder than I thought. Having grown up with anime, more or less, it's not a genre for me… it's just that anime programs sometimes fit into genres I love. So this is gonna be hard. Of course, obviously at #0, we have Gekiganger III. Because where else would it be but at the very top? (Joooooe!!!)
All right, let's do this:
- Fullmetal Alchemist
- Gundam
- Martian Successor Nadesico
- Code Geass
- Trigun
- Key the Metal Idol
- Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
- Ghost in the Shell
- Bubblegum Crisis
- Read or Die (as a bonus recommendation
- Psycho-Pass
The stuff that didn't make that list is staggering to me, because all of it that was even in consideration belongs on the list. Even so, I cheated massively. Gundam? Which Gundam. The answer is YES. And I consider both FMA series to be worth your viewing time—2003 is really good. Brotherhood is better, but incomplete on its own because they didn't want to waste your time with stuff you already saw from 2003. (Even so, the tone of 2003 is different than Brotherhood would be for the same stories.) Likewise for Ghost in the Shell … and even Bubblegum Crisis. Sure, Tokyo 2040 doesn't have the music of the original, but it's got the fleshed out plot that 2032 wanted.
Oh man … you have no idea how completely screwed the production of BGC was … unless you specifically know about it. Like, there's much questionableness, contracts, restrictions, a buyout, an angry creator who showed up with freakin' Yakuza in tow … yes. It's pretty amazing either exists, and it's shocking they're both any good.
Key the Metal Idol is one that maybe is lesser known. Very recommended.
<InSpectreRetro> All hail Zargon!!! Morcar only has 1BP.
