Space Crusade or Space Hulk?

Space Crusade was a great game, but Space Hulk was outstanding. But in my opinion it was ruined by the psychic rules. They were fun, but the "I'll just smite your assault cannon man before he has fired a single shot" sort of ruined the fun for me. It just became a battle of the psychers, which was fun, but took away all the nuances of the other aspects of the game I loved.

They've fixed the psychic rules, very minimal now. All the expansion stuff Deathwing etc comes as standard but no psychic Genestealers or Hybrids, shame. So i went with getting 1st edition plus expansions, finally treat my self last month.

Also never got why they didn't put those psychic cards on normal cards.

I also snatched up a 4th ed back in 2014.
I always sort of regretted not getting the 3rd ed from 2009. At that time I was too broke to justify getting it...
But it was all for the better as 4th had more content. Yay for waiting!
Had I gotten 3rd ed back then I would have been pissed though for not being able to get the new content without buying the entire box again!

I played a couple of missions with a friend.
Gameplay is very fun. The rules are pretty complicated, but not in a bad way and not more than I'm sure they will stick after a few more missions.
The timer is especially a fun element - but we had to stop it all the time when consulting rules...

I really have to say: The presentation is sublime. The models, the boards, the tokens... Everything is of the highest quality. It is really an extremely beautiful game.

A few negative things:
* The set-up time is ridiculous. Putting the map together really takes a long time. Also putting it away again.
* The minis are art pieces first and game pieces second. In a game where facing matters, the models should have clear facing! Not twisting their torso 90 degrees, looking in another direction while aiming in a third...
* The minis are too big to stand close comfortably.

I bought two sh 2014s. One for - maaaaybeee - a next big project as HQ is now. One for... well, you know ... financial reasons when times are tougher than when I bought them.
I do want to have Space crusade but only complete, unpainted, and with both expansions.
I'm not gonna hunt down individual parts.

To be honest I think vanilla Space Crusade is best. Unless you are a completionist like me, you'll be just as happy without the expansions.
They are both somewhat flawed...

The eldar from "Eldar Attack" are a little overpowered compared to a marine squad. It's still the better of the two expansions though.

In Mission Dreadnought things gets a little too messy with larger squads, new weapons (powercreep) and the Tarantula.
This really takes away from the neat clean gameplay that is vanilla.

Well, if I start anything hobbywise about Space Crusade, it's likely gonna receive the same treatment from me as HQ did.
Flaws are there to build a hobby on.

I sold an incomplete copy of SC years ago for like $5 on ebay lol (I should have cancelled the auction, I was stupid), then all of a sudden it's popular for some reason and selling for big $ all over the place.

But this year I managed to get a copy of SC and Mission Dreadnought for $100 buy it now locally in Aus, I was stoked - MD seems kinda hard to find here. Dude hadn't played it since he was a kid - nothing painted and it was barely used but a lot of weapons were glued on. Still, good value.

Eldar attack.... I missed a recent auction that had base + MD + eldar for around $100 AU as well.. but lots of paint and cards looks a bit ratty and I couldn't see if all the eldar were actually there and seller didn't know and never sent me more photos.. so oh well. Don't think it was released here but I've found resources online to recreate it and there's a LOT of Eldar on ebay.. so I don't think it will be hard to DIY that one when we get to it.

Also pro-tip for all Space Crusaders:

The studs that keep the marines' weapons in place break really easily.
Consider either magnetizing the whole thing or getting some extra marines and glue everything in place.

Yeah... If you want the art go forth, if you want game, go first. The learning curve will be easier too as first doesn't have all the extras thrown in, not until you get to the expansions. The main difference in normal game play 4th edition is the marines can re overwatch eaiser. This is balanced by giving the Genestealers more blips, turning the game into more of a kill frenzy. 1st edition Sustained fire went 6,5,4 but not on overwatch as the target is considered moving very fast.

3rd edition messed up LoS
2nd flamer targets squares not rooms.
I like to keep both. Either a heavy flamer with 2 fire modes or heavy flamer using 1st ed and a standard flamer using 2nd ed
2nd has better Terminator models than 1st still suiting game play.
