Hello fellow questers

Postby wallydubbs » Monday October 22nd, 2018 3:51pm

So I was around 6 and my brother was 8 when our parents first got us HeroQuest. Unfortunately we were too young and immature to take care of the game or even learn how to play; pieces were lost and broken and the board fell into disrepair without a game being played.

27 years later my girlfriend and I are cleaning out her mother's basement after she passed away and I find an unopened Return of the Witch Lord box. I recognize the title "HeroQuest" but the box is too small and the picture is different. It wasn't the same game ruined in my youth, but she told me it was the expansion pack... which I never knew existed. She apparently had the Original too when she was younger but never had anyone to play with. She thought it might still be in the basement somewhere. Cleaning out the basement now turned into a quest to find a lost artifact... a quest we were doomed to fail. Perhaps her mother sold it I a tag sale, but we never found it...

Flash forward 5 months to a week prior to my 34th birthday, she got me a present i wasn't expecting. She was so excited to give it to me she couldn't wait the extra week. I opened box and peeled through the bubble wrap..

"OhmyGod!" As soon as I realized what it was. I really didn't care how much she paid for it, but I had to know, a copy on Amazon was nearly $600, I never thought you'd find a complete version on EBay in such great condition. She managed to find one for $146; worth every penny and more.

I'd later start a quest finding the rest of the Expansion packs, but Keller's Keep was the only one to be found at a reasonable price asides from a German version of Wizard's of Morcar. A complete set of Frozen Horror ran over $300 while Against the Ogre Hoard and the Elf Quest Pack was nowhere to be found. However thanks to this site I'm able to print up most of the missing cards and quest packs. Tiles are a bit more difficult to come by, but I can buy but I can get blank ones from certain board game makers and print and paste and new face on them.
The Barbarian and Elf quests have 3D prints available I can have made at the library; poor quality bit it'll do for what cannot be found.
I also bought the 4 Wizard's of Morcar figurines for $80, but they're nowhere to be found in the US. I found a copy of HeroQuest Advanced, which had the Dark Company, who are also used a mercenaries for Frozen Horror and Wizard's of Morcar, so now all I needed are the figurines for Against the Ogre Hoard. Maybe one day I'll get to see what entails the American versions of Against the Ogre Hoard and Wizard's of Morcar...

I look forward to hearing the insights of the questing community. Thanks for reading a God Bless.

Although it's not the real thing, you can also look around the various miniature producers around the world. Games Workshop for instance sells miniatures that belong to the WarHammer world, in which HeroQuest is embedded; WarHammer miniatures are sized identically. Other manufacturers produce similar sized miniatures that you could use as proxy to the real stuff, when that real stuff is either too expensive or simply unobtainable.

And congrats on such a treasure! And then I mean both the game, as well as such a sweet girlfriend to get you such a treasure throve - I'd say, cherish them both! :D

Simply they doesn't exist at all, because they were released only in Europe, while Barbarian and Elf Quest Packs were released only in the USA.
Happy you found all that stuff in few time and welcome to the forum.
If you are interested in a painted set of the Ogres, I guess I can help you, feel free to PM me.

Yes, I know AtOH never officially came out in the US, but this site has a downloadable PDF adapted to American rules that I'd be curiou to see what it entails.
