Greetings from the Dungeons

Postby neoproxy » June 17th, 2015, 10:51 pm

Hail and Well met,

I have been aware of this site for some time, but never really had much to do with it. Well times change little barbarians grow up so fast, I have dusted off my old game and started my two whelps onto the road of adventure. They are enjoying it immensely and would play every day if I let them. Here is a pic of them giving their best battle cry:

Image

I have changed the story a bit to fall in line with the D&D game I play in. I'm documenting their adventures here:

---

The site here is nice and there is a ton of good resources. I don't post on forums a lot these days, but I'll try to stop in from time to time and tell a tale.

Welcome Neoproxy!

I bet your two adventurers share their heroic tales to the kids at school! I wouldn't be surprised if you find yourself hosting a slumber party quest-a-thon soon :)

Welcome neo :D
Whenever i read about folks on here playing HQ with their kids, i always think; top rate parenting fella |_P - you're keeping them away from the pc/tv/tablet/smarphone screens with some quality dad time

When i had the time to DM games (in the not so distant past <.<) it was great to bring a little more narrative and RP elements to the game. Which your little'uns may find fun. Some ideas for you maybe:

When they find a "potion" in game. Prepare some small cool looking glass vials (i use these: http://www.pirlointernational.com/img/p ... ickbox.jpg) and fill them with things like fruit juices, or sour liquid candy (http://www.candywarehouse.com/assets/it ... 6663-w.jpg) Because hey, potions dont always have to taste nice right? ;) And when they want to take the potion in game, they have to drink the vial :P
(i tend to use other things like neat whiskey into our games, since its 18+ :P)

Or did they find up holy water? Have a vial for that too (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/23 ... ef452e.jpg) they have to throw the (small!) vial of water over you when they use it to kill one of your skeletons. They have a laugh and you get a wet face!

Use real metal coins to keep track of gold! http://campaigncoins.com/

Tend to play in the evening, dim the main lights and get some candles going on for that atmosphere http://tinyurl.com/nzrwusw Depends how much you trust them around candles at that age, i guess

Also i usually buy a bottle of mead and dish that out in silver goblets also, you could do the same with juice?

And of course replace the cardboard furniture with some more detailed 3d scenery ;)

Perhaps i take this geeky gaming to a whole new level of awesome/eccentricity (delete as appropriate to your opinion) now if only i could get someone to make a wizards hat like this http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/ ... 5qhlvc.jpg ... xD

We did things like this a lot when we started roleplaying in the mid eighties. One time the DM (we circled the role of DM) gave me a small bottle with the label "Lebe wohl!" (literally "live well", so it could contain a healing potion, but also a common farewell greeting, so it could as well mean "good bye"/"when you drink this, you'll be gone"). I didn't use it until my character was near zero health. Then, to use it, I had to actually drink it. It contained an extremely hot pepperoni schnapps homemade by the DM's father, but in-game, it was a healing potion.

Have a look ;)

I remember doing this as a kid and using plastic egg cups filled with green cordial for healing potions, red cordial for strength and heroic brew... so long ago but we thought it was the best thing ever !
