It's my first time so please be gentle.

Somehow I stumbled in here and after reading for a few hours, 4am now, figured I'd register.

I'm slowly trying to paint my HQ minis and was wondering what helpful links people could point me to. I talked with a friend of mine who does, in his own words, 'low to moderate quality miniature painting' and was hoping to have a bit more insight before I do too much damage in my painting attempt. I'm already greatly displeased with my initial attempt with my 4 skeletons :skeleton: , veering towards displeased with my mummy :mummy: attempt, and pleasantly surprised with my greenies :goblin: :orc: .

Glad to see there's others out there like me who are still into quality retro games.

just read the forum as well, and post pics of your work, so people can comment and give tips ;)

techniques: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1346&p=15208&hilit=painting#p15208

1. always undercoat with primer (black works great 90% of the time) GW citadel chaos black is amazing stuff, albeit expensive.
2. learn how to drybrush
3. get some good brushes (tiny, bigger and drybrush at least)
4. use acrylic paints. there are cheaper alternatives for GW citadel paints too.
5. be patient, and rest your arms on a table, and use a cork or a cap to stick your mini on with some putty or something (chewing gum)
6. google for reference material
7. afterward, spray model with matte varnish in 2 or 3 very thin, quick layers, and let each layer dry at least 30 minutes, in a dry environment. (to prevent bubbles)
8. practice, practice, practice. :)

Use citadel/GW paints. They rock.
Paints like Revell, Humbrol etc are good for the big 'dIY models' of planes, cars etc, not for minis.

there are plenty good alternatives for citadel, like vallejo or reaper.
Revell, humbrol etc. are not acrylic paints, but oil based.

I just Image Citadel. I used them back in the day I painted all my models and it never let me down.

they are good, I use them as well, but mainly because my local hobby shop only has GW stuff. I'm getting some reaper paints next year though. Dripper bottles, so you can drop some paint on a palette, and the rest stays sealed better.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I've uploaded some of my minis http://www.yeoldeinn.com/hqforum/gallery/search.php?keywords=&terms=all&username=ivenbach&sk=t&sd=d&e=0&submit=Search. I wasn't sure if I should continue asking questions in the lobby part of I you prefer new threads to be started and linked. I've them all primed and am working on them as I get the time.

I forgot to mention that my paint is the cheapest acrylic that Michael's has to offer (on sale for 50c for 2fl oz). I know that has a lot to do with it. Should I splurge for good paints or practice with what I have for now till I learn how to do more?

never hurts to practice first. You can always strip badly painted mini's later after you've gotten better at it with a soak in Dettol :)
