A Sculpted Mousling Warrior

Tips and tricks about sculpting.

A Sculpted Mousling Warrior

I've developed an interest in mouslings made by Dark Heaven.

Sadly the ones I'm primarily interested are fighters like the thief or the knight pictured above. Since these particular pieces aren't sold separately, if I wanted more fighters, I'd have to buy the set and I'd wind up with a lot of bards.

Since I've been playing around with sculpting, I decided to turn my hand to sculpting a warrior mouse. I started off with a wire figure padded with aluminum foil with a cork base.

I then sculpted clay over the wire and foil. Although I was originally going for a helmet similar to the mousling knight, I wound up sculpting a face. Since I now have some new sculpting tools, I decided to make rows of holes to simulate the appearance of chain mail. Here is the clay figure before I baked it in the oven.

Here is the completed product.

One interesting thing about the shield ... I made it using the plastic lid of some candy sprinkles for baked goods. I was originally going to recycle it but as I was about to throw it away, I noticed a raised triangle with the #4 printed on the side of the lid. If I had to guess, I'd say that this was an in-house lid number to differentiate it from lids made for other products ... but of course, I don't know for sure.

Since the triangle was just the right size for a mousling's shield, I literally cut it out, glued it on, and painted it.

I think this figure turned out quite well. It only took me three hours to make from start to finish. This included the time needed for painting and flocking.

I will have to see what other mouslings I can produce. One nice thing about sculpting my own figures is that each will be a one-of-a-kind figurine. Instead of having a dozen armored mousling knights with identical poses (and a dozen bards that I really didn't want), I can now (eventually) craft additional mouslings each with a unique pose.

Second that--great job. I recently have been painting Mice and Mystics with my family. Great game that fits the Mouseling theme well. Made by a long-time Hero Quest enthusiast, by the way.

I've never heard of Mice and Mystics but I loved the figures.

Here's another mousling warrior. I crafted a spearman ... spear mouse ... warrior with a spear. Below left is the wire frame. Below right is the sculpted clay figure. I put this piece in armor but initially forgot to add a helmet. By the time I remembered the helmet, I'd already put the ears on and to facilitate adding the armor, I baked the mousling before getting to the armor. Removing the ears would have damaged the figure and putting a helmet on around the ears would have been too time consuming, so I left the helmet off.

Here is the completed mousling with a spear. I put him beside the one with the sword that I made last night (technically early this morning). In the background is the armored mousling knight that was made by Dark Heaven.

As far as monster cards go, this is what I came up with. The mousling only has one hit point but the horde will compensate by their numbers and agility. If you've ever chased a live mouse in your home, those creatures are really fast! I incorporated their speed as a special ability. Instead of having to move all in one turn, they can partially move, launch their attack, and then run away.

To make up for their weak melee skills, I've purchased some archers from Dark Heaven. I also bought 6 spear mice from Eureka's U.S. distributor.
