Purging... gauging interest

Postby Markus Darwath » Sunday November 5th, 2023 6:11pm

Brief background; in the 90s I had two HQ base sets (NA), all 4 of the retail NA expansions, Advanced HeroQuest, and Dragon Strike (which was bought mainly to expand HQ with. Time and unfortunate storage incidents have left me with a lot of components, but nothing complete from any of it. Right now I'm trying to purge the overwhelming clutter in my house, so I'm getting rid of a bunch of these components. I'm keeping all the miniatures and furniture I have for D&D, but figured I'd see if anyone might want some of the other stuff before I throw it out. If there's any interest I can post pics, but for now I'll just give a rundown.

HQ board, rough but serviceable
Dragon Strike boards, they have warping and moisture damage. The castle/tunnels board is in better shape than the town/outdoors which has bubbling in the surfaces.
2 Zargon screens, one's a little rough but usable. The other is in decent shape but has a few pieces of scotch tape on it (I think my brother-in-law taped it to the table when he played).
Armory box lid insert. the main section looks good but the side flaps are tattered and partially separated in places
Hero cards, I have two of the dwarf and one barbarian
AHQ rulebook, it's definitely been through some humidity, but the pages aren't stuck together and it's fully readable.
tiles, tokens, cardboard doors with stands. A sizeable mixed lot from all of the sets. I don't know off hand if any of the tokens came from Dragon Strike or if all the non-HQ ones are from AHQ.
HeroQuest cards, all types. I know I'm missing one of the elf spells and have a two duplicates among the elemental spells. Don't know the level of completion or duplication among the Chaos spells, wandering monsters, treasure, or artifacts. A bunch of the artifact cards are the small ones from whichever expansions.
Dragon Strike cards, that's all I really know about them. I haven't gone through them and don't remember what came with the game.

I also have 2 of the original wooden movement dice and 9 combat dice. I'm planning to keep those for nostalgia, but could be talked out of them for the right incentive.

One last thing... I have a Weapons and Warriors, Castle Combat Set. All the ammo balls are missing, the rubber bands have long disintegrated, not sure if everything else is intact or not. None of it would really work well with HeroQuest or D&D unless you just want some generic soldiers, but I figure there might be some collector overlap.

I'm not about to invest the time and money into trying to complete any of this stuff as sets, so again I just thought I'd offer it up for anyone who is engaged in such an effort. Cost wise, I'd really only be looking to cover shipping plus a bit for my time... I'm not worried about trying to assess collector value or anything.

Update: most of the lot has been claimed. I've decided that the game boards aren't worth mailing due to the odd size and their condition. I'll keep the better of the two Zargon screens and toss the one with more wear (plus a bunch of penciled notes I hadn't spotted before). That just leaves the Dragon Strike cards of unknown completeness, and the three HQ hero info tiles. I have one of the Barbarian and two of the Dwarf (which is ironic since both of the Dwarf minis are long lost.) I'll hold those a couple more days just because they don't take much space. Beyond that they get tossed if nobody wants them.

Just for grins I did a quick count on the Dragon Strike cards: 38 Treasure, 10 Monster, 5 character Reference, 5 Sneak Attack, 10 Teraptus, 12 Trap, and Hero Spells = 12 1st level, 12 2nd level, 6 3rd level. In case that info is helpful.

Oops I missed this topic, ship has probably sailed, but any chance you have the North American blocked square (the ones that look like walls/bricks as opposed to rubble) and/or Skull Tokens and dice are always welcome?

How many blocked squares are you looking for?

Ideally a full set (not sure exactly how many came with the NA edition and equally I'm not sure how many skull tiles came with the NA edition for that matter).

The reason behind this, is that in the EA editions of the game, falling blocks and blocked squares are treated differently in game play, the former can be removed, the latter cannot, for example, but they use the same tile, which means unless a hero saw it fall, (if a block falls in a dungeon and noone is there to hear it, can it be removed?) they are reliant on information held only by the EWP, as to whether attempting to remove it is just a waste of an action. Whilst this isn't really an issue for me as it pales into insignificance when compared to the larger issue of being able to remove pits and fallen blocks at all, the fact that the North American Edition differentiated between the two types by introducing 2 distinct tiles AND AT THE SAME TIME removed the differences between the two in play by scrapping the ability to remove fallen blocks rendering the two distinct tile types is a clear case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing!

However by using the blocked square tiles (the ones that look like bricks) to imply a permanent new wall has been built or a passage is now permanently blocked does open up the possibility of using the ones that look more like "rubble" as a new "rubble" feature.

When a ceiling (or is it a roof?) collapses like in the Quest for the Spirit Blade, or if you want to use similar in your own homebrew quests as a collapsing ceiling or a deadfall trap, you could be hit by the falling rocks or pieces of masonry for 2 combat dice of damage, and then place a rubble marker that doesn't block movement but does introduce a 1 square movement penalty to move from that square and does cause anyone on the rubble square to roll 1 less combat dice in attack and defence...

I don't know how many are supposed to come with it either. I have an incomplete set with some kellar's keep tiles mixed in, which has been added to.

The situation gets weird because some of them are double sided.
There are 4 kinds of blocked squares. The rear side may have a skull, rubble, pit trap, or blank white. There are also at least 3 kinds of secret doors; the other side of a secret door may have a skull, rubble, or a pit trap. I also have a pit trap with blank white back, and some double sided skulls. I have double length block walls with black backs and one with a double length pit on the back.

Even some of the larger expansion tiles are double sided with different rooms on each side. So when I look at the tile lists on ye olde inn, I'm not sure if the second sides are accounted for or not.

You've probably already found the answer, but from what I was able to find it seems the base game came with... 2 blocked double hall tiles, 12 skull/blocked hall, 8 rubble/blocked, 3 pit/blocked, 3 pit/secret door, 4 rubble/secret door.
BQP/FH had 6 skull/skull and 6 blocked hall/ice. EQP/MotM had 1 skull/skull, 4 skull/secret door, 3 skull/gear pile, 4 pit/wolf, 6 skull/blocked, 2 blocked double hall/double pit.
KK and RotWL had single sided tiles. KK tiles are thin cardstock and white on back. RotWL tiles are black on back and I think also thin cardstock (not positive on that last point) KK has 12 blocked halls, 2 pits, 2 trap doors and a bunch of straight stairs and stuff you weren't asking about. RotWL has 6 blocked halls, 4 secret doors and 2 pits. If I'm right that RotWL's tiles are thin, then any thick single sided tiles (black back) would be from AHQ. I know Advanced Hero Quest is where the skull tiles with numbers on them came from.
