Now I'm thinking the engraving should have said "HeroChest"

Wow...choice gets more difficult! I think the furthest to the left is still my favorite, followed by nr.206.

Cant wait to see it stained.

More stain prep. Sanded off the burn marks from the etching. Some more dents filled. Taping the letters to protect from the stain.

Been following... and again, this is great work.

I would be nervous about the tape having mixed results and only finding out afterwards. If the intent is to use different colors, and the letters are to be DARKER, then I would either:

Do the letters first and brush the lighter stain over it and not worry about the slight change.

OR

Do the letters first then keep a dry rag handy to quickly mop up any splashing onto the letters.

I have not thought about the case were the letters are to be lighter or no stain.

Looking forward to seeing the results!

Its more the fact I want to see the etch once I have stained the box and go from there to see if the etch needs to be colored at all

Chose the one on the left. Did a test stain on the underside of the box. Looks good to go. Back to prepping the box

Finally prepped for staining after sanding the underside clear and some micro sanding around the other sides.
Used a tack cloth to clean any dust etc. Then coated the outside in mineral oil and let dry to clean the wood more. Then once dry, I brushed on the pre-stain.

Stained the underside first using a foam brush and worked my way to the lid. Foam brush for most of the lid but used a small paint brush for around the letters. Friggin love the grains on the lid. Will post closer pics of it later.

Before/after tape reveal
I decided I am going to leave the letters as they are. I like how subtle it is.

Here's a shot with all the hardware loosely fit on. I won't be attaching any of it for a while yet as it will just get in the way while I shift my focus back to the inside.
