Exterior is pretty banged up, lots of tears and nicks all over the outside



Hinges are the cheap low quality nail on type so I will be replacing those altogether. Latches are still good so will reuse those



Carefully ran an exacto knife along the sides near the top so I can preserve the black siding on the inside of the case. Then began tearing all of the exteriors black covering off leaving quite the nasty mess to sand off.

This is a great thread. Pleaee keep up with the documentation of your progress.

Sanded all of the residue off starting with a 220 course grit , then a 150 and finally a 50 grit to prep for stain. Ordered a bunch of antique brass hardware for the exterior. Hinges, clasps, feet, and corners. Putting off stain till I get the metal hardware in the mail so I can see what color contrasts best to the hardware.

Debating on interior stain for the wood borders I put in (and separators I will be putting in later). Curious on peoples thoughts on the color they like and why. Have 8 different stains shown.

In the bottom right pic I also tried a couple of patterns of vertical and horizontal slabs of wood. Find the vertical ones look too home and garden. Curious on thoughts on other possible patterns.

As for a pattern, how far are you willing to go? If you'd want to go deep, you could create dungeon walls that surround the case on the inside. Make it look like worn bricks, with mold and moss growing here and there, cracked stones, etc ... but that's pretty detailed for something that you'd only see when opening the case to grab a mini .

I am sticking with just the wood pieces for the sides, need the stability of the sections. Adding dungeon walls will take up space and I may not be able to fit the minis all in the top if I do that. I am thinking of potential patterns to stain into the wood itself like the examples. In the end it may just be a solid stain color if I can't find a pattern that works. I kinda like the horizontal planks but dunno if it would be too much.
