Modular board - double size hallways

Postby Stairwell » August 9th, 2015, 7:06 pm

Hi

I am thinking of trying to create a modular board, possibly magnetic as I have an unused large whiteboard at home, but I was thinking of blowing up the tiles to double size, or making them double width at least in the hallways..

The reason I was thinking of this is that I had the Ogre Horde back when I was a kid - but my butthole ex step dad never returned my stuff after he left, so those Ogres are either chillin' in his cupboard still or in a bin (or hopefully in some lucky Tasmanian thrift store patrons hands lol).

Anyway... I bought a band of Golgfags mercenaries recently which I thought could do an OK job as stand in's (these chaps http://www.sodemons.com/rhogres2/1598rrogres3/index.htm .. would have preferred the earlier merc ogres that resemble the HQ ones but they are like $90 each lol..) but of course they are on 40mm bases.. they will be knocking down doors left and right...

So I thought maybe when I get around to doing my mod-board I could do double wide hallways... shouldn't affect movement of the heroes too much as they can just stick to the walls or move diagonally, or I just make each square bigger instead of two sq wide.. whatever.. but if I double the rooms surely they will be way too huge.. anyone else here tried anything similar to play with bigger based mini's on their own boards?

If you do 30mm squares then the 40mm bases only overlap 5mm. You should be able to make this work. As long as you don't have two doors across from each other.

How do you justify these behemoths fitting through the doors? If they fit, perhaps you can re-base them.

I have GW river trolls and I have not yet based them. I was going to use them in outdoor settings (30mm). Let me know what you figure out.

Some models can be squeezed onto much small bases than you'd think. Increases the chance of a timberrrrr! but they fit in okay.

Heh, I could try and re-base them.. but these guys have really stretched out stances compared to the current range of Ogre Bulls. I didn't like the look of the current Bulls, but I saw someones conversions here and they looked ok... maybe I'll try and pick up a few cheaply on ebay one day for re-basing. I do occasionally see sets of the OG ogre horde guys going for around $60-80 in Australia, I always mange to miss the end of the auction or not have any cash to splash when they come up though.

If you double the square sizes in the hall ways you will have to double the size on the room tiles too or the grid wont match up.

I use 30mm tiles in combination with 25mm round bases for HQ. I haven't decided if I use 25, 30 or 40 mm for the original Ogres and the Gargoyle, yet. My Gargoyles in the gallery are on 40mm bases and are standing on my 30mm tiles Image They only overlap a few millimeters, because my joints are 2-3mm.

I use some Jes Goodwin Ogres for HQ, too. For any miniature of the same size I strongly recommend 40 mm bases. They emphasise their size, too.

These guys look pretty good too - I like the idea of some of the old Ogres (not sure about these ones but they look it) being somewhat aligned to whoever they can get the most gold/fun out of. I read some fluff about Golgfag that was pretty interesting. Ogre Kingdoms new stuff just seems like they kill everything with no allegiances (as loose as they may be). But I haven't read that much into it... maybe there's more to it.

Those 30mm bases look pretty good.. I think I could squeeze the guys onto those. How do you make the 30mm tiles?

These bases are standard 40 mm round ones. The tiles are 30 mm. The tiles are made with moulds of the hoster of the hq-cooperation website, named Flint. He offers prepainted modular HQ-dungeons or the moulds for DIY. I've posted pics of my dungeon somewhere in Ye Old Inn.

For what it's worth, I've been working on a set with 40mm squares for a while now. Works nicely as the minis don't have to be precisely aligned, and the bigger bases makes things more stable. Plus modern large minis fit too!

My only drawback has been sourcing furniture, but papercraft seems to be working out OK.

I'd go with 30mm tiles. Big enough for all your HQ models, even the bigger ones, and furniture still matches. Some furniture now fits on 2 squares instead of 3, but that's no problem. 40mm is too big for most tables ;)
