HeroQuest: Master Edition

Postby Kurgan » Saturday January 22nd, 2022 6:34pm

So I hadn't seen these high quality pictures before... just happened across them on the UK's Amazon page:

It's obviously "Advanced Quest" but I had thought this version was only released in the UK and not Germany, interesting. Maybe others knew that...

(sadly it's listed as "unavailable")

I know back of the box artwork isn't always accurate, but interestingly the Men-At-Arms (or in this case "Dark Warriors" since it's Dark Company) are depicted in gray (like the Frozen Horror), rather than the traditional red. This back of the box illustration might be another possible "quest" to be reconstructed... (not saying the mercenary placement is very original)

Hi, in the Spanish version, the Dark Warriors are also shown in grey colour in the back picture although their miniatures were red.

It is the same version of Advanced Quests (the Dark Company), it has different names depending by the country.
In Germany was called "Master Edition".
In Italy was "Le Nuove Imprese" (it means "The New Quests")
In spain was "Edición Renovada y Ampliada" (means "Renowed and Expanded")
French and Dutch was something like "The New Edition" and so on...

One interesting point of the Advanced Quest box is it shows the only available 'official' coloured picture of a Dark Warrior:

HQ_Dark_Warrior_official_colours.jpg

Of course it is just a painting scheme for the miniatures, but I always considered so cool to imagine Dark Warriors' clothes and equiment looked like this picture. This look is not 'dark' since I think it just represent a regular imperial soldier, probably from Ostermark imperial region according to Warhammer lore, but considering the Dark Company are good guys who have succumbed to darkness, I think this non-dark look could be valid for Dark Company.

Related to this, another interesting point is I think that such Dark Warrior picture was not planned to be shown there in first design stages of the box. Instead of that was going to be placed a fimir as I already advanced in this post.

So there may be more gray mercenaries out there than previously thought (if the pictures were accurate to what was in the box)? Also cool to hear about the other alternate names and the paint scheme idea.

It could also maybe just the lighting but in the picture they appear a lighter gray than the other gray figures. The different shades of gray for the same type of figure was something I noticed in my Battlemasters set. Of course to many "gray" says "paint me."

Interesting info everybody.

Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, the European boxes only contained red miniatures for Dark Warriors, the same sprue as WoM expansion for Mercenaries. I guess the picture only shows miniature prototypes. The copy I own included red miniatures but the box back shows them in grey. Red colour too for the miniatures from WoM expansion I own.

That's what I wondered. Many boxes in the US it will say colors may vary. They don't look like straight up painted metal as in that other picture you showed. If this photo had been taken in recent years I would even wonder if they were 3d printed resin. :)

I am sure they are not metal prototypes on the back of the box but gray plastic models.
If you look at the back of the Ogre Horde box they are of different coors too (light blue and orange), so it was not the first time they were using plastic prototypes for the rear pictures.

Nope. But some American kids bought this (and other EU exclusives) in the US because some local game shops would import foreign games (or "my dad brought it home from a business trip").
