I think I know why they set the doors stay open rule.

There are only a few clossed doors in the game set and allot of open ones.

If every door that was found was closed behind the Heroes you would run out of clossed doors rapidly.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

That's a good point. I will need a door imp who opens doors.

This has simply demonstrated to me I need to pick up a few of those Ebay auctions of doors.

When you boil it down to gaming rules, there is no practical difference between an open door and one that has been opened and then closed again, except the monsters cannot move through the closed one (which would be unfair).
Heroes would be able to re-open it every time (as it's not an action), and players know what is behind it anyways.
In the original rules, a closed door conceals what lies behind it. Once the heores open it, they can see what's behind and possibly use it, but have to deal with the monsters. To maintain this condition, monsters cannot open doors. Heroes have to explore the dungeon themselves. As soon as the monsters are revealed, they may move freely. Thus, heroes cannot re-close doors. Simple as that.

This way, just two simple rules are needed:
- "Monsters cannot open doors"
- "Open doors cannot be closed"

The alternative version would have been:
- "Heroes can open and close doors at will"
- "Monsters can open and close doors, but can't open a door that hasn't been opened by a hero before"
Same effect, but very confusing.
Have a look ;)

If you allow Heroes to close a door it stands to reason that a monster who see's the hero close the door behind him would follow and open the door.

I think you could try allowing opening and closing of doors with Big Bene's rule alteration. To avoid the confusion he's letting on to, why not paint some of the (closed) door bases, so that they are denoted as having been previously opened by a Hero and now eligible for monster opening. You will probably need to buy those doors, however.

Have a look at"Grey Wolfs Advanced Heroquest " site. Click on Tiles, he has some interesting Wooden doors on there. All you need is some half round wooden moulding, cut to length, with a saw cut along the middle for some new doors. If one can use alternative mins, why not doors?

Good ideas!

I have resolved to purchase some more furniture pieces and doors have just made it on the list. Would have been nice if they had included more furniture options in the expansions. Like an iron maiden and other torture chamber equipment.
Maybe a bed. An archery target and a weapon rack full of ranged weapons to compliment the melee weapons rack.

oh well

I have been eyeing other games for compatable stuff.

You can always make double doors out of HQ door bases and prints onto card.
