Member Escopana 1 informed me through Facebook that Line of Sight diagram shown in the Rulebook has been corrected by Hasbro in the English Version 2, so now it also shows the missing line to indicate that the upper right corner orc is not visible for the Elf. Se picture of V2 below:

Therefore it confirms that diagram in Rulebook Version 1 was an errata and the Line of Sight rules of HeroQuest remake are intended to be exactly the same as in the classic edition of the game.

Additionally, I can confirm that this correction in V2 rulebook is also introduced in Italian V2 version BUT unfortunately it was not introduced in Spanish V2 version of the Rulebook which still has the same incorrect diagram as the V1 version. No idea about other languages.

As per a 2021 version published & distributed for retail by Avalon Hill / Hasbro, the Orc around the top right corner is officially ruled out of sight. Image is taken from a new version of the base game rulebook, which is accredited by the new Avalon hill logo & published as 2021.

Interesting! So it was an error of omission, not an attempt to revise the gameplay mechanic after all...

I'll be grabbing the retail - assuming it has tiles for Halls of the High Mages & The Arena of Misildia, and others along with a corrected quest book.... on that note; the quest "Halls of the High Mages" is a really broken quest design, shouldn't the Altar of the High Mages actually have 2 stairwells in it - one to get down into the lower level with the monsters, and another to go down again to exit the quest?

Well, not fully sure about the problem, but in my opinion it is not needed another stairs tile. It is true the room design is a bit rare but I think the designer intention was considering such stairs a more stretch one than usual, since only one figure could be there. This could justify that the same stair continue downstairsby occuping only 4 squares. If the heroes want to exit the quest through it I think they just should step on the tile and declare their intention as usual, as secondary use for this tile (primary use of it is going down to the Altar room from the upper gallery).

In other words, I think only one tile is needed, but maybe the texts at quest notes should be more clarifying than they are written now.

yeah I did initially think that, but I'm on the fence about it - I almost like the idea of having no stairway and forcing a hero to jump down
"A hero may jump into the room below but loses 1 Body Point."

there is also no reason to visit any of the other rooms once you reach the arena, it literally could be over in less than 5mins:

- Starting corridor
- room A
- adjoining room
- corridor C
- gallery/Altar of the high mages (with no monsters as they have to be trigered in room "E").
- descend down the stairs/quest exit.

you can finish it, with a minimum encounter of 3 monsters. and 27 squares of movement.

There is no forced pathway to ensure the hero's even come to any of the rooms "D" to be revealed the info "Go beneath the altar room, to the Arena of Misildia.” which leads into the next quest, or to the room E that triggers the monsters in the Altar of the high mages (Do not place out the monsters until the heroes trigger the summoning in room E).

I haven't hit this quest book yet with my new group, I'm glad I'm digging into it now rather than on the fly and having a shocking group game because of it.

Ok, now I think I understand what you mean... however I think the quest is not broken. I think the point which is not too clear is what happens with the stairway. In my opinion it seems that the access to the Arena of Misildia is closed until the monsters in room C are summoned, the moment when the stairway gives ALSO access to the lower level. That's my interpretation from sentence "The stairway in Altar Room leads down another level" written in the quest notes. Such sentence is written at the very end of Note E (maybe you missed it), so I think this sentence only applies when the Dread sorcerer is found, so before that the next quest could not be accesed by the stairs.

Nevertheless, it is true that maybe it could be better explained, for example by adding this other words in bold "The stairway in Altar Room now also leads down another level", or just by limiting the use of the stairs to go to the next quest and only allowing going down from the gallery by jumping, not using the stairs.

I have updated the errata summary here according to the last findings and discussions.

Last update of the list was performed on December (6 months ago, approx.).

Why is the middle right orc visible?

Of course because the diagram says it!! :-)

Yes, it is a tricky point. If you join the center of the Elf square and the Orc square, the straight line needs to cross part of the Wizard square, so strictly talking the Orc should not be visible for the Elf according to the rules described in the Rulebook. The Rulebook text and the diagram are not coherent... but we know this is a very old discussion. One of the big gaps in the rules this game has had since decades.

Nevertheless, in the Line of Sight discussion thread I proposed a homebrew interpretation for this topic which mostly fits with the diagram and solve most of the situations (you can see this post, this post, and this post).

I too have followed and contributed to that thread (along with pretty much everyone else) and whilst I agree that your "interpretation" is fine it feels contrived (that isn't meant as a dig) probably for the good reason that it IS contrived to fit a diagram that in my opinion is not correct. I prefer a cleaner interpretation, ignoring the dodgy aspects of the diagram, and reinforcing the distinction between "what can be seen" and "what can be shot at" as what can be seen is a broader set of which "what can be shot at" is a sub-set. That said I won't hijack this errata thread with yet more discussions on seeing and line of sight, I will instead update that thread with the current rules that we play and extend that great debate a little further...

No problem! Your constructive opinions are always welcome.

Of course ignoring the diagram and hombrew the rule maybe is the right approach to interprete it in a more practical way, no doubt about it, so yes, better continue in the dedicated thread.

Yeah the middle right Orc always seemed a stretch to me (once I started paying attention to the actual diagram!), written by a player who just really really wanted to hit that Orc but didn't have any movement left...

I prefer not to have to use a pointer/ruler when playing, but so be it, if people really want to be able to do so based on this!
