Great find Hispazargon, I'll post up that links on the OP!
Odd about the "Bone Pile" tile (ROTWL) and "Statue" (KK, interestingly it has a map symbol in the book!) and mystery tile "Zargon/Mentor Symbols" (GS).
Maybe it's a "Proof of purchase"? (Cash that in for the "app"?).
deadgamer of youtube's channel:
HeroQuest Comparison #1Kellar's Keep Comparison Video (#2)Return of the WitchLord Comparison Video (#3)(and now having watched his "walkthroughs" of the quest books)
The intro video he doesn't reveal much other than showing the relative box sizes and his recommendation.
Starting into the KK video I see already they refer to the Orcs Zargon has gathered as "allied Orcs" they also don't capitalize "Evil Sorcerer" and sometimes refer to the King as "His Majesty."
Grin's Crag survives, as do the Halls of Belorn. The Great Citadel, the titles of all of the quests, the same, layouts look the same too.
"Let no man say..." replaced with "Let no one say..." (Quest 5)
"Each of you will receive..." replaced with "Each of you has earned..." (Ending)
Allied Orcs... meaning some of them aren't allied with Zargon (ie: could be neutral or possibly good).
ROTWL Video, back of the box doesn't mention Karak Varn (or as it's known in the remake "Kaba Karn"), but it does mention the "mutant army."
They took the crosses off of the Tombstone tiles... (replaced with badguy symbols and swords?)
I see in the quest books they've eliminated the "privacy envelope" (a page full of orange dots and brown blotches) patter pages from the quest book. I guess they're not so worried about people trying to see through the pages. The worst temptation these days is for a kid to look up the quest maps on their phone (which is why we use alternate layouts!).
The shiny paper might show fingerprints and creases easier and wouldn't take pencil quite so well as the old ordinary paper. The lack of rusty staples is a good thing but if that stitching comes out it will be harder to repair if you're not an experienced book binder I suppose.
I like this deadgamer guy's comparisons... you can see the difference in shade of green for the classic figures (which, granted, came in various shades) to the new ones.
He shows that despite the KK/ROTWL being single sided (white on the back like the originals), the cardstock for the tiles is much thicker (like the GS) rather than really thin like the US versions were for these. I guess the upside is if you mix the expansion tiles in with your GS tiles, you can spot them easier in the pile because of the stark white backs to them.
Hmm, the gold values are listed on the Potion Equipment cards too. Does this mean you can sell them back to the Alchemist shop (or rather to the Armory, since that's where all equipment goes) between quests? An unused potion should be worth the same value (vs. a weapon or piece of armor that may have started to warp/rust or display wear and tear). Do potions lose their vitality over time? Granted, this wouldn't be an unlimited gold trick, because without the homebrew rule you probably won't be stockpiling too many of these particular potions from KK/ROTWL. Plus no gold values on the Treasure deck potions. Still, interesting.
Also, I see KK/ROTWL have a 'build your own quest' blank at the end of their respective quest books, with the map symbols. That's something that wasn't in the originals! (unlike the GS where it was all right there for you, you had to copy the symbols and then copy the GS quest book again to get that).
Looks like the covers to the Quest books are the same kind of "glossy magazine print" as the rest of the books, there's no real "cover" to speak of, like the originals that had a kind of thicker cardstock cover (not the US GS, I think some of them like the US edition or the 1st edition and Japanese version were just paper covers).
He gave you a shout out HZ, in a new video just posted!
