HeroQuest with kids

Postby DungeonDwarf » April 8th, 2019, 3:30 pm

Okay, so I'm assuming a lot of us played HeroQuest as children. Is/has any of you here replayed it with you children? If so, about what age do you think is the youngest to start them on it? Did you adjust any rules to make the game play better for the kids?

I've been prepping and painting up my HeroQuest in preparation for this momentous occasion. :dwarf:

Going by other threads I have read, quite a few people seem to suggest that around five years old is do-able, provided you help them out a lot. My lad isn’t even two yet, so I’ve got quite a wait on my hands :(

I am doing a long running campaign with older children (early teens), and I still find that I have to go pretty easy on them. It’s funny, cus they all think that I am a really evil dungeon master but unbeknownst to them I’m actually holding back quite a bit. I think it adds to their experience that they think I’m going all out to get them, whilst at the same time holding back due to the fact that we play so infrequently that it would be a bit out of order for me to fully punish their forgetfulness of the rules and tactics.

I started my son at age 5. He does pretty good with just needing little reminders. He gets the main premise and I started out with easier Quests. 2 Quests per sitting about maxes out the attention span.

Wow 2 quests per sitting? I think that’s better than I did back when I was 15!

By the time you take out the game and set everything up, you need to play at least 2. Set up takes too long to justify only playing 1.

god me too! i cant wait! :)
My little girl turns 5 in august and certainly for her, i don't think she'll be ready. shes making up her own rules to Lego heroica at the moment. :p
I'm hoping 6 might be the magic number. but i think it would depend on the individual child.

I tried with my son at around 7. He could read okay, but a lot of words he didn't know. I had to make special
cards with easy-to-read spells and weapons and what they did. I still had to explain a lot, but he could
understand it all. It was just hard because of the reading...just too much reading was needed.

He is 9-1/2 now, and he could do just fine now. We just haven't had a chance to play.

Also - it is hard to play with just one player. I had him playing two fighter characters, and I
played the elf and wizard. It was a lot for him to keep up with then. I think he would do okay
with two characters now - but without any other players, it would still be hard.

What was funny, though - he split the characters up, and somehow he still made it through, but
they almost died...all of them.

I play the EWP my 10 yr old daughter plays 3 characters and my 6 yr old son plays 2. They usually split up in their "groups".

I started my daughter when she was around 7, I would get her to sit through 2 or 3 quests and then that was it. I haven't been able to get her to play sense she finished the Original Game System.

No special rules, made her play like I make everyone else...Wait no that's a lie, I did let her jump to a door if no monsters/traps where in the line of sight. That way there I could keep her attention on the game and not everything else going on in the house.

My oldest (son) is 5 years old. I still feel he’s a little young. I read somewhere that someone started their young kids on the “Dungeon!” Boardgame as a sort of stepping stone to HeroQuest. So far it’s working well and he enjoys it. He still calls it “HeroQuest” though!
