Do Chaos Warriors need to eat?

Postby The Admiral » March 4th, 2018, 7:55 am

This question has arisen due the presence of a Chaos Warrior NPC, based on the character from Warhammer Quest, in a group of Heroes playing the 'Out of the Wastes' Questpack. In the early quests the Heroes suffer from malnourishment, but if the CW doesn't need food he would be unaffected. I was thinking that maybe they are just sustained by chaos energy? Unless anyone with some knowledge of this actually knows, I am going with the no food required option.

As there is a big issue early in this questpack as to whether to retain the CW's services at the risk of him turning against them, a more powerful, and therefore useful, CW would be a benefit for the group to keep around for longer.

They sustain their warped bodies exclusively with protein shakes through straws because of these tiny little helmet slits.

I thought they were no more men but just armour animated by the power of Chaos... I can't remember where I read this, I just checked the questbook and it is not written there

From Warhammer Wiki:

Chaos Warriors are evil men that have decided to forsake their former lives and give themselves wholly to Chaos as an instrument of destruction. Sealed within impossibly large Chaos Armor, these men will never more feel the need of hunger, thirst, or the touch of a woman. They fully become weapons dedicated to the Gods of Chaos. They are no longer truly human, but living weapons, honed perfectly for the bloody tasks before them. To be a Chaos Warrior means to literally exchanged your humanity for a life of constant war in the name of the Ruinous Powers and the dark promises of power and immortality they have to offer.

And because they're evil they'll use a fresh platsic straw for every sip.

Probably the need to have a chaos halfling along to prepare some snacks for them. Other than that, they should starve to death and turn into Chaos Warrior Zombies.
But then we would have to determine how many spaces they move and what attack/defence dice they would roll.
Ze plot thickenz.

For anyone playing Hero Quest in a Warhammer Fantasy-based world, the Warhammer wiki reference is all you need. An Out of the Wastes Chaos Warrior fits that mold. For those who limit their world to what was published specifically for Hero Quest, here are some more limited, but relevant entries:

from the back of the NA Quest Book and the Monster Gallery of the Hero Quest Sticker Album:
    Chaos Warriors
These are men who have become monsters– slaves to darkness. They are always heavily armored and often bear weapons enchanted with Chaos magic. These dread warriors strike fear into all but the bravest (or most foolish) of opponents.
from the Hero Quest Marvel Winter Special:
"They have sold their souls to Chaos, and in return have been given magical armour which is bonded to their skin. They carry swords carved with the most malevolent runes imaginable, and they know that if they do not perform some act of evil every day, Chaos will warp them into shapes of ultimate horror."
Of these two, the HQMWS is the less reliable source. Though Stephen Baker was credited as an advisor, Ken and Jo Walton, the freelance fantasy writers of the text, were only brought on for this one project. Also, only swords are mentioned as their weapon, while HQ Chaos Warriors are almost always depicted with battle axes in Hero Quest. I'd say the flavor of the exerpt is very Games Workshop. Trolls, Rat Ogres and Skaven were also mentioned in the same The Monstrous Regiment article.
