The Heroquest Sculpts - Ask Bob Naismith

Postby Thantos » Thursday July 20th, 2017 4:19am

I have been working with sculptor Bob Naismith on various miniature projects over the last few years. But due to my huge oversight, it was only a few days ago that I put 1+1 together in my head and realised Bob actually sculpted some of the Heroquest miniatures which we all treasure in their retro glory! :D And was one of the key fellas in designing and working out the process behind GW's first plastic miniatures

I thought it would be great to gather up a few HQ model design/sculpting questions from the Ye Olde Inn here and put them to Bob. He's kindly agreed to answer some of the best ones so we can do an online i̶n̶t̶e̶r̶r̶o̶g̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶ interview! ;)

If you have any questions about the design, art style, sculpting or behind the scenes of the HQ miniature making process, post up a question here and I'll forward them onto Bob in a weeks time for him to answer.
I hope he remembers all the details as he has sculpted a hell of a lot of models in the last 30 years! xD

Would Mr. Bob Naismith sign a HeroQuest monster card in relation to a miniature he made?

Yes, I know, its cheesy, but heck, you never know, he might do it!

Does he know anything about the proposed sculpts for the never published Wizard and Dwarf quest packs?

I'd like to know how much input either Game Workshop or Milton Bradley had while he was sculpting? Did they just let him do his thing or were they strict on the design?

Where did he draw his inspiration from for the model designs?

Which minis did he sculpt specifically?

And a follow up, where there any that he would have liked to have sculpted but did not get the chance?

maj!
maj! = Klingon word for "Good". Used in the context of "I approve".

Nice :D will send these over in a few days.

I'll probably post some prints to him later, so maybe should just slip in some monster cards for the signing xD

Im going to ask:
Why the unusual choice of shape for the bases, instead of slottabases?
Were there any other heroes or monsters planned that didnt made it through development?

I also would like to know this... but I read somewhere that at that time the sculptors were used to swap minis each othes to finish the sculpts.
So I guess all the minis are sculpted by more than just one person.
Anywhere, is there any update for this post? I'd like to read the answers
