Is everyone on Ye Olde Inn a HQ25 hater? Dungeon Saga too?

Postby Grossey » Wednesday June 24th, 2015 5:45pm

I love me heroquest! I'm not sure how much of it is nostalgia and how much is because of the game mechanics. I also enjoy Advanced Heroquest and Warhammer Quest, but something about the original game I love.

So, is everyone on the Ye Olde Inn boards a hater of the 'classic' Heroquest 25th edition coming soon (maybe) by Gamezone? From what I read in pieces from old posts, it sure seems that way. I get the whole copyright issue and it does seem shady on if Gamezone got permission from Games Workshop and Hasbro (parker brothers) to release it in Spain only. For the record, I can't stand that Glorantha game system, only because they poopoo'd the kickstarter campaign.

I did support the Lanzanos crowdfunding campaign. I really hope I see the copy show up on my front door someday. Part of me is skeptical that I will ever get it. Has anyone ever ordered anything from Gamezone before?

I did discover a youtube video released on May 14, 2015 that shows many of the miniatures to be released with the game. It also has comparison shots of the original miniatures next to the new gamezone ones.
https://youtu.be/FJ11Z6ZFMoY

And, I noticed that the Heroquest25 facebook page has some new pictures of the furniture greens for the game. Last year at this time, Gamezone did a presentation at a gaming convention in Zaragoza, Spain. I googled it and the same convention is going on this weekend (June 27-28). I also saw that a distribution company in Spain says the release game to the public is July 31, 2015. I don't know the legitimacy of that claim at all.

What do people think about the Dungeon Saga game coming out from Mantic? The developers say that they hope the game fills the void left by Heroquest. Which is great for the gaming community, because Heroquest was the gateway drug for a lot of us. I know nothing about the Mantic fantasy universe, so I'll be going into the game system fresh. Let's hope they have playtesting at GenCon this year.

I think copyright is a terrible thing that has a net negative effect on society, especially with terms so long that people's great-grandchildren benefit on a continuing basis from works made almost a century ago. That Gamezone may have infringed upon the original HeroQuest in a fiscally-troubling way is regrettable, but it won't stop me from ordering a copy of HQ25 from them. What would stop me, however, is if I decide that the business isn't trustworthy enough to place an order with and expect to receive my product, or if I decide that what they're offering isn't worth the price they ask for it.

I didn't kickstart anything, by the way. At the time I was between jobs and had no discretionary funds to speak of, but there was too much negative publicity surrounding the Gamezone thing for me to feel OK about throwing them some money anyway. Dungeon Saga looks pretty cool, actually, but I haven't read much about it yet.

Seems like (and I have said this before), HQ25 is quite polarizing.

Between the questionable legality of some of the choices GZ made in terms of IP ownership and their public statements that they are within their rights to publish - to the anger some HQ fans have expressed about releasing a game that may not actually be HQ but intentionally capitalizing on gamer nostalgia by using the name - to the outrage of publishers who currently hold the copy rights for the name - there is a lot to confuse the issue.

Then, when you look at what this project may be by the time it launches; Cool HQ-like board, great looking concept art for the minis and furniture, fantastic looking prototype art for the cards - Well, I personally understand the desire that many have to see what this thing actually is and how close it will be to the original game.

AHQ was okay, so was WHQ, but neither was as good as the first version of HQ in my opinion. I like Descent, I really like Imperial Assault, I am enjoying the D&D board games, but all of them while enjoyable don't quite hit the HQ itch, they just don't. HQ25 may, on the other hand, even with its questionable and highly controversial origins, promise to deliver what has been missing with so many dungeon crawlers over the years.

If that turns out to be the case, I may be one of those folks that crosses the picket lines to grab a copy.

Dungeon Saga, on the other hand, has never really solidified on my radar... I know about it cursorily only. It looks like it has components that are similar to AHQ or WHQ, and the art all looks great, but i don't know a lot about it's history or if it's a good game (don't actually know if it's available yet)...

What I have seen however, has not gotten my juices going the way that HQ25 has, which could be exactly why some people are so passionately anti-HQ25, because of the uncertainty about what it is when compared to the promise of being Hero Quest.

I steered clear of HQ25th, and instead made my own HQ25th by revamping petty much everything in hero quest.
Dungeon saga however I backed the Kickstarter and bought all the expansions for it, and my brother also joined me.

I am really looking forward to gettin delivery of it as by then my family should have finished all the hero quest quests and alot of the fan made ones...

I like the way it gives the evil player close to an equal chance of winning and it is alot more strategic in game play,

No, I don't hate it. I just gave so many reasons why people should not fund this campaign that I'm tired of it.
I also still think it will not see the light of day. Ever.
Not as any form of HeroQuest, and that is going to be the rip-off it was instigated as.

When it was first Kickstarted, I asked HQ25 if they had a legal right to make it, they said yes, so I funded it.

Then it turned out they didn't have that right at all, and knew it full well. They'd openly, intentionally and deliberately lied to me. The Kickstarter was blocked and they tried to find other ways to fund it. But no way am I funding people who lied to me (and thousands of others) just to try to make a quick buck.

"Hate" is a strong word, as it implies that I put energy into it. But I do despise liars, frauds and swindlers, and that's exactly what HQ25 are.

I'm excited about Dungeon saga, i regret not having funded the kickstarter, but will buy it later. The makers are former games workshop icons and some of the models look awesome (some less great...) i hope they'l fit in nicely with HQ models. When Zealot starts selling their HQ bases again i can put them all on the same base.
and they are doing pretty much the same as Gamezone except they're not putting the HQ name on it.

The Heroquest name is a mess and has been since the 90ies
MD was using it and MB probably didn't know about it until it was too late. Apprently they worked something out.

if you ask me, Moon design did well by abandoning the name back then and MB should have either open sourced it, or continued it. As MD jumped back on the name (in 2009?) and MB abandoned it (in 95?) and GZ started this without asking anyone's permission, i'd say everyone involved is either an idiot or just greedy. Probably both.In any case this has collector's item written all over it xD

When I looked into HQ25 for the first time they were actively being kicked off of KickStarter. That was a LONG time ago. If you funded a campaign for this thing, you still have yet to receive the game… That is amazing considering that it is mostly paper and cardboard.

I funded Twisting Catacombs run by Zealot back in... October? And that is already about to ship! It is loads more unique minis than HQ25 and a great value. And while it is clear that the items are multi use, they are deliberate HQ replacements yet never used those words. "Classic Dungeon Crawler" - never needed too :). A real first class operation and KickStarter.

While I don't hate HQ25, I could smell these guys coming. It was clear that ultimately it will be against the law to sell this product in the US, so I will never have the opportunity to buy one anyway. Re-naming and selling may not be possible either, because they are themselves showing it as a copy of sorts. So black market and international shipping are your only real options. So even if it is a good value, has cool minis, and great new cards, I don't see myself ever bothering.
