But now a few days later she's kind of getting the idea of rolling the movement dice (now being changed to a static number to make it easier and faster for her) and combat dice to 'beat' the monster it's a lot better. Highlights so far have been mentioning magic and having her say enthusiastically 'Abracadabra' to cast it. Using a sleep spell to put a monster to sleep and afterwards her saying 'I have to move quiet because the monster is sleeping'. Kids pick up on roleplaying a lot more than adults it seems.

Adults may call it roleplaying, but kids know it as imaaaginaaation. I agree playing with children can be a bit of a chore, but the perk is their uninhibited display of that vital, but often neglected element in our thinking. Hero Quest rocks.

Well, that gaming practice isn't called munchkin for nothing.

I haven't played in like 15 years now. I spent a lot of time with my brother and my father around the kitchen table playing for hours on end. Since it was my brother's copy of the game, he was always the Evil Wizard (Zargon in this case since I'm in the US). I always used the barbarian and the dwarf, while my father would be the elf and the wizard.

I've been thinking about getting back into the game, and have been picking up copies of the game system and quest packs when I can. I'm hoping to be able to teach my children how to play when they get a little bit older. Any body have any tips on getting your kids interested in the game?

Wait, the elf wanted help with 2 skeletons?

Treasure or not, let him die. We need a new elf!

I mostly enjoy the mechanics of any RPG, Hero Quest included. I haven't played this game in a long time and don't really bother keeping count of the years, but it's been a while. I've been wanting to play though and have been fooling around with getting the game onto Roll20, but if I do I'm definitely going to overhaul it a bit. I don't think I could tolerate a game using the old rules.
Unless you specify your version I'm going by the US rules.
