How I envisioned my system working with a map, is that the map is of the region in question and basically at any scale. Each Overlanding Course would be marked on the map, and will be marked to note its length of distance in leagues, and any special notes for Zargon or the Heroes to acknowledge. Every Overlanding Course could have special rules for Occurences. The actual amount of Ambush Tokens Zargon gets, should reflect on the length of the Overlanding Course. An example of a particularly dangerous Course, would be a short one that gives Zargon a high amount of Ambush Tokens to use.

I could be motivated to design a Course Book.

One more thing: I'm going to play solo mainly. The .doc file I gave in first post allows that.

I’ve also post some “solo rules” in the forum, but I believe if you want to play the game just use the original quests, and move the players as if they were real players. It’s the closest feel to the real thing.

It’s what I do when I am making new quests (and I have time to spend) and I could say it has some fun, especially when I am playtesting bosses and I am trying to think what players do… of course sometimes I roll dices to help me out, but in most cases the common sense shows the way.

HQ is as we say an “open source” system. Create your own quests (share them :P ) and when you’ll find a group you will have lots of playtested quest to have fun with.

I could use random variant and sometimes original quests. But I guess normal quests would have a disadvantage in the fact that I will know what is behind every door.

Could someone tell me if these figures have been painted black, or were they produced like that? http://i.ebayimg.com/t/HEROQUEST-High-A ... ~60_12.JPG

Nah, that's just a really bad picture.
You can vaguely make out the gray color scale on the chaos warrior and the
gargoyle. The others are green...dark green, so they look black on the photo.

Definitely unpainted. I copied the image to Photoshop and brightened it up to be sure. The gargoyle's wings are upside-down. Hopefully not glued that way.

My opinion is they were lightly spray painted with a black basecoat to serve as a primer. Judging from the uneven covering of the broken arm and sword, I'd say the job was left uncomplete. Another guess is they were painted while laid down, which would account for the difference in coloring of the bases (not covered with black well or at all). Compare the alchemist-bench jars--those aren't spray painted at all.

The picture color isn't good, however, so maybe drathe and Torilen have the right of it.

I'm with drathe there. Completely unpainted. Bad picture, too dark environment will do that.
But I do not have any doubt.

Advanced Heroquest used a simple table between expeditions. Some could be translated to Hero Quest, it's spiritual--but more successful--little brother. They are town-related, rather than focused on travel.

RANDOM EVENTS TABLE
Roll wRandom Event wwwwwwwwwww..ww
2-4 mNo event.
5 mIllness: One of the Heroes (decide randomly) is struck by
man illness. Unless he visits the Healer and pays 100 GCs, he
mhas to miss the next expedition.
6 mInjury: A nagging reminder of the previous expedition is
mcausing a random Hero pain. Roll 3 damage dice against
mstarting Toughness, and that many Wounds are lost before
mthe expedition starts.
7 mTrouble With The Law: If any Hero is carrying Greek Fire,
mthe local Watch takes exception to the fire risk. Each Hero
mwith Greek Fire is fined 30 GCs per flask.
8 mGratitude: The locals have collected 50 GCs in thanks for
mthe monsters you have killed so far.
9 mTithe: Pay 10% (round up) of all money banked with a
mmoneylender as a tithe to the City Fathers.
10 mReplace Weapons: A randomly-selected Hero has found
mone of his non-magical weapons to be damaged. He must
mpay to replace the most expensive weapon he owns (or lose
mthat weapon).
11 mRobbery!: All money left in lodgings is stolen.
12-13 mNo event.
14 mPickpocket: A random Hero loses 25% (round down) of
mthe GCs he carries (ie not in lodgings or banked).
15 mHenchman Retires: A random Henchman takes his pay
mand retires.
16 mMan-at-Arms: A Man-at-Arms offers his services to a random
mHero free of charge for one expedition.
17 mJealous Ruler: The city's ruler demands the 'gift' of a
mrandom magic item from a random Hero. The chosen Hero
mcannot refuse.
18 mPreparedness: Your last visit cost the monsters dear. They
mdetermine to be better prepared next time. The GM may
mstart the expedition with 2 dungeon counters.
19 mRisk Money: For each Henchman who died on the last
mexpedition, all Henchmen currently in employment with
mthe Heroes demand an immediate risk bonus equal to their
mpay. You must pay this or lose them.
20 mIt Doesn't Pay To Be Famous: From now on, all cost of
mliving expenses are doubled.
21 mMap For Sale: The GM must offer you a treasure map for
m400 GCs.
22-24 mNo event.

That random table should be more than good enough for most people. Random tables are good that way.
