Roleplay book for Heroquest?

Postby chadwarden » Thursday September 19th, 2013 3:14pm

Did someone make something like Warhammer Quest Roleplay book but for HeroQuest? I would like to see some rules for travel between cities. Some stuff I found here http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/17188 ... -rules-doc but no travel rules. I didn't play Warhammer Quest so I don't even know how does it look like and why heroes are traveling between cities, but I wanted some campaign like play with world map, similiar to Descent 2ed.

Hello Chadwarden and welcome to the inn ! Yes Torilen made a huge set of houserules about rpg HeroQuest and it is pretty comprehensive !

concerning travelling between cities, I assume you're talking about warhammer quest rules ? If so, they can easily be adapted to HeroQuest. The travel hazard table are really great addition.

Hi!

Since I don't have WarhammerQuest, could you explain briefly why heroes travel between cities? I think in HeroQuest I would make travel as something to be done between mission locales and main town, like in Descent 2ed. I like idea of such travel because it reminds me of Talisman boardgame. :)

The point of travel in WHQ is to add some logic and roleplay. The heroes aren't just warping from dungeon to dungeon. They have a life besides questing (what's up with that?).
Dungeons aren't placed conveniently right next to towns, so after a completed dungeon they need to actually travel to the nearest town. Dungeon → Town → Dungeon → Town → Dungeon...
On the journey random stuff happens through rolls on a table.

Once they reach a city they can do almost everything you could normally do in a city. Trade, train, get drunk, rest and heal, visit a variety of specialist stores and services.
Random events also occur while in the city. You can also buy mules, carts and even property if you are wealthy enough.
if I recall correctly the only way to actually keep a hero and level up is to play the RP version. The alternative is just playing a single quest with fresh heroes.

Note: I haven't ever actually played the game, but the RP book is a great source of inspiration ;)

Unfortunately, my expansion does not specifically cover traveling outdoors.
I do offer some expanded rules - climbing, jumping, swimming, etc. But not really traveling.
The thread with this expansion is here:

This is only for the rules, though. I have my expanded monsters, spells, equipment and such here:

Now, as far as traveling, if you want, I can put some stuff together for you. It might take a few days, though.
But I'd be happy to do it. I'm pretty good at mixing old school D&D rules with HQ...I can simply take the old D&D
rules for traveling and work them up for HQ, if you want.

Just let me know.

In WHQRP You have the option to travel to a village, town or city. Each has more special locations and shops than the other.

You decide what you wanna go for and then rolls a number of weeks based on which you choose. Villages are not far away while cities require quite a journey (if I recall correctly it's 1D6, 2D6 and 3D6 weeks).
Then you roll for random events for each week of travel.

Thank you torilen. Let my clarify that I'm not trying to turn HeroQuest into regular RPG, I just want some nice rules to have some fun between dungeon crawls. Keeping that in mind, I would like to have traveling system similiar to the one from WarhammerQuest, which may or may not require changing some statistics (for example 100 pieces of gold probably is more valuable in one game than the other). I was thinking about buying WarhammerQuest Roleplay book alone, but the only one on ebay costs 15 pounds, too much.
So yes, it could be nice if you made travel system for HQ inspired by WarhammerQuest, trying not to plagiarize it (keeping it fair use). I guess I could make it myself also, since I know more or less how it should look like from descriptions.

One more thing: I'm going to play solo mainly. The .doc file I gave in first post allows that.

Funny fact i recently think about converting those travelling hazards into cards :-) i think it would be a great addition to the game ! But we will certainly need new artwork for it !

Actually I don't have HeroQuest yet. I always dreamed about obtaining this game and now I'm trying to buy it at ebay.co.uk because I found that there are huge bargains (around 15 pounds for complete game). But sellers doesn't want to ship it internationally. :( What to do...
