1 2 and 3. Is there and overarching plot? Do I need to play 1 and 2 before playing 3?
If not, which version/release/entry is the best?

I downloaded 3 but deleted it. It was just too much for what I was looking for. After that I downloaded 1 and enjoy it. It plays a lot like HQ (simple). I'm not interested in something too complicated to mess with on my phone, but that's just my opinion.

3 plays more like an rpg. 1 plays like HQ.

gotcha. 3 = too much D&D. 1 = HQ = D&D LITE.
What do you know about 2?

EDIT:

Just watched a bunch of Videos of Arcane Quest HD. I'm done. I'm sold. Getting that.
Also just watch a video specifically comparing HD to 3 and saying exactly what you said. 1 is HQ. 3 is way more complicated.
Getting Arcane Quest HD as soon as possible. And I'm so happy.

ADDITIONALLY:

I just downloaded Arcane Quest HD.
It's rather enjoyable.

I really dig this game. My six and seven year old kids enjoy it, as well. I have the first Arcane Quest on my personal phone, and I have Arcane Quest HD on a back up that I mostly use for games for the kids. Both are really fun. The original definitely feels more like a board game and that's what I wanted. The HD version has improvements and additions that are neat and the visuals are great. Great games. I tip my hat to the developers
