I think that this is one of those times, when you actually have to look closely at the statistics to realize, that sometimes, statistics are never as accurate as you believe them to be.

Skewed statistics only works in politics, because people (in general) are so freakin' stupid that they will believe pretty much everything that comes out of a politicians mouth. The irony is, is that the only politicians that get criticized most harshly are the ones that truly care enough about their jobs to do it, where as the ones who are most praised have done absolutely nothing (or at least nothing right). One of the biggest ironies here in the states, at least for the presidential election, is that our votes really don't count. The electoral college actually counts. They just tally individual votes "for fun"! Now, technically we vote in the people that make up the electoral college, but most people don't vote in the "less important" elections.

Here, we don't vote for our Prime Minister. We vote for a party, or local representative in our House of Commons (who is normally a member of a party). The leader of the party with the most representatives elected becomes the Prime Minister (providing that person was also elected as the local representative in the area they were running in). We don't vote at all for our Senators. They're appointed by the Prime Minister if there is a Senate seat available.

Congratulations! You have just a fraggled up political system as we do. It's as if those in power are really just saying "We want your support in doing something we planned on doing anyway!" It's sort of like reverse psychology. They make us believe that we want the same things as they do.
