I think the player can pick which spells he/she wants to use. Some expansions(Kellers keep, Return of the witch Lord) say that you can pick a spell scroll at random. Since these expansions were before Mage of the Mirror, doesn't that set precedent? I feel the word random would have been used if the player was intended to blindly pick elf spells. It is a fun option for a table to pick random, but I think majority of the table should agree on thus.

Yeah the intention is to pick three spells you want. The trouble is knowing them well enough to know what you'll need. Normally you're allowed to pick new spells each quest. Time Stop, Hypnotic Blaze and Flash Back seem like good choices. Two are situational but can be game-changers. Random is certainly going to be more challenging.

yes, it is weird and badly worded, but can be useful against monsters with bows or crossbows

The odds of the combo is low. I've yet to see it actually work in action, but, hey, you never know.

Not that the HQ Companion App is the end-all be all of rules, but it is interesting that it basically turns any monster attack (well I haven't tested it on Mummies or specters yet) into 1 die.

It makes a certain amount of sense though... just about every weapon you could imagine in the games has some wood in it, and would lose function if that wood was suddenly destroyed (similar to the idea of targeting metal in a piece of equipment... though keep in mind the "Rust" from NA/remake only targets helmets and swords, while the version from Wizards of Morcar targets any equipment, doesn't say anything about metal!).

The App might do that, but that's making this spell overly powerful. I allow it to work only on ranged weapons: Orc Archers, Skeleton Archers, Elven Archers and Crossbowmen. If there are multiple bowmen it will work on all you can see. Otherwise if this takes precedents over all monsters it's unfair to the Fear spell. It's too powerful in that regards. Slow has lasting effects with the only stipulation being the Elf has to see the monster.

The other time when Twist Wood can damage "wooden" weapons is with the reflecting spell rebound (mirror magic). Thus if it hits a Hero's weapon it can destroy a staff or crossbow... at the very least. Shields are called wood by Avalon Hill these days, so there's another but you could say it's "armor" rather than a "weapon."

Granted, an Elf that possesses the Ancient Staff will probably win the "spell tennis match" with a Dread Sorcerer, but still.

I can see your point on that one. Though the Ancient Staff is overpowered. Considering it is a Staff, I houserule it that the Elf has to have the Ancient Staff equipped as a weapon to use it. It's extremely powerful, no doubt, but the Elf is stuck with the choice: great magical defense but poor offense or work with a good offensive weapon but not able to reverse the spells.
