Orc beserker-Card

Postby TMU » April 20th, 2013, 10:52 am

Hi! I'm currently translating WoM, and I got stuck on this card. The word "beserker" doesn't have a translation in Finnish. So, if anyone of you guys could tell me what does that word mean, it would help me greatly. :)

A berserker is someone who goes berserk.
'to go berserk' in the fighting context means to fight/attack without any remorse, on a murderous frenzy, in an overwhelming bloodlust.

In some gaming systems - going berserk has good and bad points.
Good point - better attack and defense, ignore pain better
Bad point - some game system require this person to make a roll each turn,
.....and attack the closest target, whether friend or foe.

Don't know if that helps any - but thought it might add to "game understanding" a bit.

A Berserker is a type of Viking warrior who goes into a blind-rage, killing anyone before them - be it friend or foe. They are not bothered by anything, and have absolutely no sense of self-preservation! They are usually depicted like this (if not fully naked, save for the fur capes):

I also like how in some system, Berserkers never have to check for leadership or moral, or otherwise have the score really high.

By the way, I never seen a game where berserk/rage adds to defense, as it all-or-nothing mode of attack.

Good points there. Thanks!

In this particular card, it allows all the :orc:, s in the same room that sorcerer is, to move and attack twice.

Another similar feat is called "riastrad," but it comes from ancient Ireland. Berserkers entered a raging frenzy, usualyl while totally nude.

Here is a description of riastrad:

The first warp-spasm seized CĂșchulainn, and made him into a monstrous thing, hideous and shapeless, unheard of. His shanks and his joints, every knuckle and angle and organ from head to foot, shook like a tree in the flood or a reed in the stream. His body made a furious twist inside his skin, so that his feet and shins switched to the rear and his heels and calves switched to the front... On his head the temple-sinews stretched to the nape of his neck, each mighty, immense, measureless knob as big as the head of a month-old child... he sucked one eye so deep into his head that a wild crane couldn't probe it onto his cheek out of the depths of his skull; the other eye fell out along his cheek. His mouth weirdly distorted: his cheek peeled back from his jaws until the gullet appeared, his lungs and his liver flapped in his mouth and throat, his lower jaw struck the upper a lion-killing blow, and fiery flakes large as a ram's fleece reached his mouth from his throat... The hair of his head twisted like the tange of a red thornbush stuck in a gap; if a royal apple tree with all its kingly fruit were shaken above him, scarce an apple would reach the ground but each would be spiked on a bristle of his hair as it stood up on his scalp with rage.

Malaysia has mengamok, today refered to as amok, or running amok. One guy with weapons kills everything within sight until taken down or out. Originally, it was thought to be caused by an evil tiger spirit.
