Basic Heroes

Postby Jonny 5 » March 12th, 2020, 1:21 pm

Hi
We've just started playing AtOH (NA version) with basic Heroes (no additional weapons etc.) Was wondering if this is a good idea as it seems pretty hard!
We managed return of the witch Lord this way this campaign seems to have stepped up in difficulty again. What do you guys think?
Thanks

I wouldn’t play it with starting Heroes. They’ll die like lemmings.
Judging by the difficulty level, it was intended to roll Heroes over from the previously released expansions.
If you don’t have experienced Heroes but really want to play this pack anyway (and I don’t blame you as it is a really good one), at least give the Heroes the 5 artefacts from the base game (Borins Armour etc), plus some suitable equipment and potions.

The DM gave us each 5 potions of healing as in the UK version and the barbarian had died 4 times by the end!

Basic heroes would not survive Against the Ogre Horde, it's much too difficult as they can't make trips to the Armory or Alchemist Shop. Some of the quests might be doable if you give them all their body points back at the start of each quest; but quests 6 and 7 most certainly can't be done in this way.

Our DM is having a bit of a rethink before the next quest. I wonder if in general we should be using tooled up heroes? Rot Witch Lord was certainty pretty tricky...

Yeah, tool them up. It's an expansion, the aim was to have Heroes go into it that already had tooled up from previous stories. If your DM really wants you to start from scratch, at least have him populate the outer Caves with weapons and artefacts that the Heroes can find.

Rot witch lord meaning return of the? Good to hear it was tricky. My group just finished Kellar's and not much challenge in a while.
