Just picked this up on eBay. I haven't recived it yet. Most likely missing a few pieces but I think it was a good buy seeing a elf pack go for over $400 yesterday.

Myself I got some warhammer ogres secondhand.

Watch out for the scale though. There are a few threads on here about the Reaper Bones. And as I recall, the orcs were big enough to be Ogres. When I need Ogres I will likely go the warhammer route. Do the older ogres look better than the new stuff? Why do they carry bear traps?

I believe that those "bear traps" are actually just artistic renderings of the god Maw, which is a big mouth in the ground. Warhammer ogres are pretty big in comparison to the HQ models, I'd only use them if I was using a board with larger squares than the standard HQ board.

Bear trap answer already given. Also, when you can use something as a weapon because it fits your own style and you're too stupid and impatient to make other weapons, you'll probably use the thing at hand, i.e. a bear trap.
As for older and newer Ogres. The newest Ogres, as far as regualr troops are concerned, are the Ogre bulls and Ironguts (which you'll be looking out for as HQ proxies) from around 2003/04. Ten years old. Older ones from GW/Citadel are always metal and have a distinctive cartoony look on them. Some are tagged Chaos Ogres.

Example for a classic Ogre of late 80s/early-mid-90s:

I have both some of the "modern" Warhammer ogres and the Heroquest ones, and they are pretty much the same size (but a completely different design). If anythng, the Heroquest ones are bigger, but not really noticeable. I even interchanged parts for modding.
Have a look ;)

Personally, nothing beats the old Citadel Ogres http://www.solegends.com/citc/c23ogres.htm and http://www.solegends.com/citcat9x4/c93570-02.htm but they might be (?) a bit pricey and hard to find on ebay these days.

The Fantasy Warlord ones from SHQ that I linked to earlier are very similar to the Heroquest sculpts I think, they're readily available and won't cost an arm and a leg.

I'm pretty fussy when it comes to minis, and I don't go in for the look of a lot of modern minis.

Even though this is a thread concerning "Against the Ogre Horde", do you have any recommendations for proxy
minis for the Barbarian Quest Pack and/or the Elf Quest pack?

I like the old Ral Partha mini's from the 1990's and back. Scale is a little smaller than the HQ mini's so they make more room on the board.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

I have. Look at reapermini.com and use their search bar. It actually works pretty well in their webstore.
Reaper is always a good starting point when looking for minis as their range is humungous and they vary in style (because fo their work-for-hire sculptors).

Not because he's a friend, but maybe you guys who are looking for the heroquest ogre figures or those from the barbarian/elf pack, might want to check out billdask's recasts.
they're of great quality. search the forum for "casting miniatures" or something for details, or drop him a pm.

on a related note on the ogres that have been mentioned, I recently got this ogre figure from a figure exchange on the warhammer forum (we didn't have one here so I had to get my fix somehow)
