The HeroQuest logo isn't necessary.

The 4 squares on the corners are columns?

Possibly. Some form of decorative space you can't step on at least.

I was disappointed not to find a Mummy lurking here, waiting to be destroyed. :( Keep digging.

Just found this. Has anyone printed it out and used it? Would love to have a mummy based quest for this board!

I would love to use this board as a green-skin lair. Those 2 square wide hallways scream for some serious battle.
But why is it called the Egyptian Board?
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

It really is a very cool board.

As to your question I am guessing it's a matter of the colors and sandy/desert theme? Interestingly, the NE most room seems to have Mayan-like pictographs for floor tiles, as opposed to Egyptian iconography.

maj!
maj! = Klingon word for "Good". Used in the context of "I approve".
